6 Neon Rainbow (New)

Tank: 10 gal ( Aqueon 10 and DIY sponge filters)
1 Betta Male
4 African Dwarf frog
3 Ghost Shrimp
2 Crystal Red Shrimp

Reading been fine for a week since my first problem in 8 month.

What you guys think ?

the 10g looks fine but the 29g looks a bit overstocked. and neon rainbows get to big for your tank.

Neon rainbows are fine for that tank IMO, it's the glass cats I'd be concerned about, which should reach around 6" each.

Lots of rainbowfish do, neon rainbows only get to like 2" though.

I actually think the OP's tank could do with more otos, they like being in big groups. Provided they are being fed properly and have healthy rounded bellies....as most people neglect the feeding aspect.

Those dwarf neon rainbows should be ok as long as you keep up with 50% or greater waterchanges weekly. Note that I said at least 50% and weekly! It's important for the health of your rainbows. Secondly, their diet. It has to have alot of vegetable matter. For a staple I would suggest spirulina flakes. They are full of protein and help fill in the vegetable requirement. Frozen peas, cooked in the microwave in a little water and then deshelled, can be fed to the fish a few days a week to also help in their vegetable requirement. Feed meaty foods, like bloodworms, sparingly. Feed live foods if you can if you want breed them as this will condition them.

After all of that, just remember: large waterchanges, lots of veggies and the rest is gravy!

Funny you mentioned ottos, I only had 1otto for 8 month and his doing just excellent, and only today i added 2 ottos and 2 more Female neon rainbows (week ago i got 3 neon rainbows and female wasn't eating and hiding all week, so i went and got 3 more females to spread aggression also for them to start school which they doing now and above mentioned female actually became active and tried to eat today ) bringing my total fish to what i have above in first post.

Thanks for advice.
Seems like everybody in this forums reading my mind today  cause i just got back from 2 fish stores looking for spirulina flakes and was unable to find anywhere.
All of my fishes diet consist of: Tropical Flakes, BloodWorms frozen and freeze dried, Brine Shrimp frozen and freeze dried, Baby Brine Shrimp frozen, Tubifex Wormes freeze dried and sterilized, Shrimp pellets, sun dried baby shrimp (gammarus), micro crabs (Cyclop-eeze), Tropical granules, sinking wafers, algae wafers as well as peas on monthly basis. Obviously i rotate them and try to make the flake as a staple food for most of my fish, but after adding Glass cats i start introducing daily frozen BloodWorms cause i read that they need it on daily basis (before used to be bi-weekly treat).

I will look for spirulina flakes on the web if i cant find in LFS.

Also im running 2 filters and i usually do about 30% water change, so if it isn't enough i will do 40%-50%.

Personally I'd swap the glass cats (you need a min. of 6 for them to be happy anyway) for 3 more cories.

Other than that keep a close eye on platy numbers - if you have males and females you will need to be able to move on the fry if they don't get eaten.

I would rather return neon rainbows, cause i love the glass cats (they are a blast to watch feeding), and regarding platy's i raised about 30 fry (3 drops) in breeding net and now i just let them drop in tank (i would love to raise them all but ill ran out of room in a month and a half st best). Most of the platy's i raised i took to lfs last week (very unpleasant experience :shout: ) in exchange for rainbows and glass cats.

So if in the future if i return my neon rainbows (unless i get attached to them) you think that cats will have enough room ?

Nope. It's not that you have too many fish, it's that the glass cats get too big and should really be kept in lager groups :good:.

Returning the rainbows wont change the dimensions of the tank, or stop the glass cats from growing :P.

Since you lost control buying,..... why not go all the way... loose total control & buy a new (larger) tank,.... then you won't be overstocked! :good:
