Air Sponge Filter Only?

As title states, Im thinking about getting a 29 gal tank set up for my hopefully soon emerging fry, and Im also noticing my filter on my daughters 20g is starting to die, so im thinking about new filters for both, can air driven sponge filters work well enough for tanks of this size? Everyone always uses internals and externals, so Im curious, it would sure save me some money! What are your guys' thoughts on air driven sponge filters?

sponge filters are very good and yes, if its big enough it wil happily deal with a tank that size. they are nice because they give the fry something to feed off when they are mature. I've got a sponge sitting in my external filter at the moment which im hoping is catching some bacteria as it looks like i'll have a few dozen cory fry in a few days and i may end up using it in a new tank for them.

Have a look at the JAD ones one eBay, pretty good and cheap.
