Air Pumps Etc

Hey all

I was planning to get an air pump and using some tubing to create a bubble wall and split it off to add more aeration to my other tanks.

so what i'm asking is, is an air pump, tubing, connecters and air-stones all i need or is there something else? i've heard about back syphoning but....!

any elaboration?

I think you are reffering to a non-return valve, cost a couple of quid. It means water cannot flow back into the pipe, eg you have a power cut and water starts flowing backwards

haha its quite funny now, but not at the time, i fell asleep on the sofa nd the airpump vibrated off the top of the tank, i woke about 4ish to hear this horrible noise, ignored it only to wake up later and realise it was the filter running dry and as i didnt have a non return valve the tank ( 100litres) had emptied thru the air line , also happend to me recently, but this time it was from my nutrafin co2 tubing.. things like this dont happen to everyone im sure.. what made me laff about the co2 time was the fact that i had nicley placed the end of the tubing into a vase at the side of the fireplace incase of any stray drops

oh we live and learn ( always better to learn from someone elses mishaps tho i think lol )

i dont use air pumps in any of my 3 tanks and all is fine. even in my co2 injected tank. if you stocking is resonable, you have a little surface adjitation and you keep up on W/C's there is no need for one. they are a complete waste of time tbh. a fishkeeping myth. along with the 2WPG crew.

Possibly, but I like my air pumps because a stream or bubbles at the rear of the tank is aesthetically pleasing.

And surely it must have some affect upon disturbing the organic film upon the surface?

Organic film mainly becomes established due to too much high protein food or bacteria bloom.

yep, if you have this problem rather than spending money on buying the airpump and not to mention the leccy to keep it going. why not address why the problem is there in the first place? do some research. or if you have a spraybar, move that towards the surface.
