Air Power`d Filteration

why do you want a big filter and how big do you want to make it?
you can make them out of PVC pipe but most people just use a box filter from the LFS. These come in different sizes and hold a bit of carbon. They are also pretty cheap, costing less than $10AU.

i want a big filter for my 680litre tank becuase i have it overstocked! i know the ones you mean i have them myself but they are way to small to to the job, what else do you reccomend?

You can use an undergravel filter plate in a plastic kitty litter tray. You put the filter plate in the tray and cover with gravel. The whole lot goes into the tank and you gravel clean it when you do water changes. If you have cichlids that dig in the gravel you can put a piece of shadecloth over the gravel in the kitty litter tray and it will stop the fish getting to the gravel.
You could use carbon instead of gravel and put a piece of Dacron (filter wool) on top of the carbon to hold it down. Or put the carbon in a mesh bag and lay it on the filter plate and fill the gaps with gravel.

All the fishrooms I have had and worked in just used undergravel or box filters in each tank. They were all run off one big air pump.

If you use a powerhead on the tank you can attach a pond prefilter to the intake. The prefilters are simply a big block of foam with a pvc pipe in the middle of it. The water is sucked through the foam and pumped out the pump. It is an effective way to filter large volumes of water.

The only other thing I can think of for carbon is the box filter or an external canister filter.
