Ahhh Purple Nitrate.

What make of nitrate test kit is it.
Is the test a liquid one.
What is the nitrate reading.

How are your water stats (ammonia, particularly)? Is your tank fully cycled (stable readings of 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite) or do you get readings regularly?

Regardless, water change and gravel cleaning are the first order of business. Get nitrite down under .25. Do a second test while you're doing that, I do occasionally get false positives, mostly with the ammonia test. If the tank was fully cycled, check around for dead fish, try to account for everybody. Test water after a couple hours to make sure it's staying down, possibly do an additional water change, then check every 12 hours and change water as necessary until it passes.

If you've been having readings, then it may just be a blip, which happens during and just after a cycle sometimes. The response is the same, water change and follow up testing, but chances are it's not something dead in the water.

hi puppy.. thats nitrIte not nitrAte.. ( API master test) (0.25ppm)

have you tested for nitrate and ammonia too?? if you have a reading of nitrate then you can do a small water change, the problem is that the filter needs a tiny amount of nitrite to cycle,so if you get rid of it all chances are making the cycle last a bit longer

post the rest of your results please :)

1.0 nitrite is very high - it needs about a 75% water change ASAP. If you absolutely can't do it now, get on it as soon as you get home.

Hey Jess, this was expected after the ammonia rise, as the next thing is a NitrIte rise. All part of the nitrogen cycled. Ammonia is converted to nitrIte which is then converted to NitrAte. Both ammonia and NitrIte are harmful to your fish in any quantity so you need to try to get the NitrIte down. You will have to perform water changes again until you can get the nitrIte as low as possible. 0 for a fully cycled tank, but keep it below 0.25ppm as best you can until it finishes the cycle. I know your getting fed up with the water changes, but its the only way to get this tank fully cycled again.

Hopefully this nitrIte spike wont last long, start with 50% water changes, if you need to do more, then wait for a couple of hours and if the nitrIte reading isnt low enough, do another 50% change.

You will get there, you thought the ammonia would never go, but it did, its just the same procedure for nitrIte. You can do it :D

API nitrate test kit is not that accurate, its the only one in there test kits which is not very good.
Tetra liquid test kit is better for nitrate reading.

Hi Wilder, Jess means NitrIte not nitrAte. But your right, the API nitrAte is hard to read and get right.

Sorry thought he said nitrate.
