This post is in reference to the breeding post, which is found a couple of post below this one. I was basically saying that i think my fish are gay because i am having a hard time breeding some wild arfas its been 8 months now. I have 1M 2F or so i believe. I have taken a few snaps, poor pictures to be honest and i do apologise in advanced.

The first link is definatley the Male..

Your male looks a bit like a sub dominant male as for the others im not sure they do look a bit like red top afras but could do with knowing what kind of afra they are.

If you want to know for sure then vent them it looks difficult but its easy just put venting in on google (dont think i can add a link from another forum )

second look it looks like pic 2 and 3 are male the colours seem a bit bright for females

The fish in my pic is an afra red top alfa male if i had another male in the tank it would be just a pale blue because its not allowed to have its breeding colours ie sub dominent It makes the whole sexing thing a pain in the ass but if thats your only afra male in the tank i would have expected much brighter colours.

i would have thought the picture (1) is a male and the one in picture (3) is also a male, i am also sure that picture (2) is a female.

I guess i will have to vent them.

Should have asked this first how big are they, They need to upto abot 2" to vent also the fish can change colour from female to male at about this size, I must admit i really struggle to sex my afras when there not in there adult colours so venting is the only 100% sure way.

they are about 5cm probably a little bigger maybe 6cms

Pretty much impossible to tell from those pics IMO, they are just too small - sorry.

What about egg spots. Can we use egg spots. I have a few in my tank but they are pretty small.

Although I did LMAO at the earlier posts, I do believe that with the exception of some higher primates and dolphins(I think dolphins are bi) animals can not be gay.

I would think it is either a sexing issue or perhaps the conditions are not ideal. Not enough females, not enough caves, no suitable breeding spot, wrong water conditions. Many species of animals do not breed when conditions are not good.

thanks for all your repiles, i am changing my tank around a lot next week, so hopefully things might change, i will also vent them to check the sex out.

Cheers

Might not be at a breeding age yet still on the small side but venting should be possible any idea what type of afra they are ?

If you have not found anything on venting here's a quick and simple how to.

1. you need good light a net and a magnifying glass helps.

2. catch the fish this is the hardest bit.

3. hold the fish in the net upside down with the head towards you and just in front of the rear fin there are 2
pores first is the anus then just below is the vent.

4. If the anus and vent are the same size as in oo then its a boy if the vent is larger as in oO its a girl.

Told you its not hard and it takes all the guess work out.

Egg spots is not a reliable way as there is only a few species it works on and even then its not 100%

thanks mate, will give that a try tonight.

Also how big do they need to be for breeding, they are at the 5-6cm mark already?

thanks for the info

That should be just about the right size for them to start but if you do have 1male and 2/3 females they should breed.

Add a picture of your whole tank there might be something else we are missing.
