Is this possible or a disaster waiting to happen?

I did it a couple of weeks ago ,no probs.i just washed the sand thoroughly, and then lowered it into the water in a jug,a bit at a time. It'll cloud up for a while, but don't panic,it will settle in a day or so. :good:

Sweet!

I've done it before with fish in the tank. It tends to cloud the water for a day or two. It's not the best way by far but can work.

REALLY wash the sand well. Don't skimp on this step. The less dust in it the better.

he's right :)

Hi MermaidMel :)

If you're just adding sand to a bare bottomed tank it's not too bad. If you have to remove another substrate first, that can get messy.

Add well washed sand slowly and turn off your filter until the larger bits settle. The worst thing about having a sand bottom is that it can easily be sucked into a filter and ruin the impeller.

i just wanna add a bit as the roots aren't buried enough, I was thinking of doing it using a small volvic bottle so it comes out the small neck very slowly and specifically and i will wash it loads first

If you have gravel on the bottom, then you could take the siphon 'adapter' off so its just the tubing, and it then gives more pressure to suck up the gravel.

That may empty a lot of water out so you could do, say, half of the gravel, and then re-fill the tank, as if you were cleaning the tank in general, leave it an hour or so, and then suck the other half up.

After that, assuming you have washed the sand, you could empty 65-70% of the water out and put the sand in conditioned water and use the same technique as above for removing the gravel.

I hope you can make sense of that.

D.

[I realise that you dont want to remove water, although this is the only way I can think of doing it.]

i did this with fish and water in iu added half an inch of sand over my gravel and its working well
i washed my sand really well
then put the sand in the tank using an extra long gravel hoover tube with the end off i just spooned the sand into the tube and it went straight down the tube to the bottom of the tank and i could place it where i wanted i didnt even have cloudy water

But did u wait for it go dry again, otherwise it wouldn't slide down the tube?

no i didnt wait for it to go dry again just plopped in the rinsed sand and it went in fine just tap the edge of the tube if any gets stuck but as long as you use a teaspoon they're no probs
