A Quick Hello And Some Questions

i never have used ammonia for a fishless cycle - only gone the food way and it has worked fine for me - i just tested the tank everyday and made sure water changed if ammonia peaked above 5 - i did it by adding small bits of food daily
Tank looks pretty cool so far

good luck sarah x

Heya,
Where abouts in Devon are you from I live in Exeter. Do know of any recommended LFS around my area?

Mike

Hi,
We have just tested our tap water Carbonate and General Hardness the results are:-

KH: 89.5 - 5 Drops
GH: 125.3 - 7 Drops

Does this sound ok, in english terms is this hard/soft for water and is it good for Tropical fish?

Mike

It is a nice middle of the road water that will have fairly stable pH between water changes. The water in your tank will tend to hang out with a pH of slightly over 7.0 when you finally are ready to have fish in it. You couldn't ask for much better water for a typical community tank.

WoooooHoooooo! In terms of hardness though is it, soft, medium or hard, just so I can choose fish better?

Oh and with my pump does it need to create all the bubbles it has a little tap like thing on the top of it that stops the bubbles however I assume this is helping to get oxygen into the water. Is there a way of doing it without the bubbles and without it sounding like a water fountain? Its a Fluval 3 Plus.

Mike

It is not really soft or hard, it is sort of a medium hardness. People that talk about having hard water, like I have are usually talking about something over 180 ppm. In some people's minds, even that 180 ppm water is considered medium. The bubbles from a Fluval 3+ are not needed for oxygen in the water. I have 4+ in one of my tanks and just left the bubble maker off of it. The water flow is high enough to disturb the water surface and that is all it takes to keep the oxygen in the water close to saturation. It is hard to get oxygen much higher than saturation for very long because the oxygen will come out of the water and go into the room air.

Thank god for the that it was beginning to sound like I had a fizzy drink next to me. I have turned it off. The top of the water has alot of movement in it and is strill producing 1 or 2 bubbles but I cant hear it.

Hi All,
We have been out this afternoon looking at possible fish for when the tank has cycled so far we have seen the following:-

Golden Shark Tetra (Pristella)
Red Tailed Rasbora
Glowlight Tetra
Cherry Barb
Copper Harlequin
Black Neon Tetra
Dwarf Gourami
Neon Tetra - Once the tank is a little more mature.

We dont plan on getting some of each as we would then be over stocked, but can you see any problems with any of the above living together? Are any of the above, ones that would be better to start with as they are hardy?

Mike

Just another quick Q, will it hurt to put the white filter pad (the one for tiny particles) in my filter to help clear the water or will this not help the cycle?

Mike

Hi,
I thought I would stick a picture of my tank in its current state, Bacterial Bloom or something else?

Hi,
I have been given some media from an established tank (1 side of the filter pad from a Fluval 3 Plus and two pieces of floss) thanks to pippoodle! how long will it be before this media starts to have an affect on my tank. I have just tested the water 9 hours after inserting it and there is no change in the test results Ammonia 4 NitrITE 0. Im assuming its either not worked or im being impatient hopefully its the latter

Mike

have you done a water change ?
if not do a water change then tets the readings in 4 hours hopefully ammonia should be down to 0 , cos the media was very mature
you need to be giving something for the bacteria to feed off of else it will die
