Ok...I have a request for a more advanced desease gallery indentification pinned article, it was only recently i remembered that we do have a desease ID pinned artile of sorts, but does appear in my honest opinion, quite jumbled up and not the most helpful of pinned articles in the comparison to many of the other informative sites out there on the internet.
I understand that pinned artciles have to be written by the member/s of this forum, the pics used also preferably owned and done by the members, but i also gather that most people wouldn't want to post pics of deseased fish in the state of mind that other members may see them as bad fish keepers or somthing, which is quite silly IMO but i can see where that may come from.

Sooo..."pause"...
My lfs, i hate to say it in some ways, has always had big issues with large stocks of deseased fish. I was considering going down there and taking pics of their deseased fish so they could be used for a fish desease pinned article here(of course no names of the lfs or people or whatever would be used/told). I was also wondering if other people could do this if they have a bad lfs near them, so it would be a more sociable effort and get more varietys and and strains of deseases in different stages of severity.

What do you guys think about it :) ? We could have some experienced members who are knowledgable on treating fish deseases plus some who have experience with keeping the sick fish in question in the situation where the treating the fish because of its type, may stray from the common tried and tested methods of treament  .

I think this is a great idea and if you were to do something so great, you would be legend! :hey:

We do have a wealth of information here, but we're sort of strapped when it comes to images/treatment of sick fish (not that there's a shortage of sickies in the ER,mind you). This is something we really need, as this is when most people find us, a handy pin will be perfect.

On a sidenote..it seems that the more experience folks have with keeping fish, the less illness they see in the home aquaria. I feel absolutely useless when it comes to sick fish topics as I have little to no experience with OTC meds and treatments. I've asked before, but this might be a good place to bring it up again, what I'd also really like to see is a list of commonly available meds and what they treat, for the US and the UK. If someone would put together one of those, it would be amazing.

Yeah, we really need pics of thing like ich, dropsy, popeye, ntd.... I would have taken some pics of my glowlights with it, but the camera wouldn't focus and its a little late for that now :S

Cool :D , Im gald to hear that others have been thinking the same thing as me, yay :P !
Hmm....So i guess thats sorted for me then, next time i go down to my lfs i'll grab my camera and get some pics of their sick fish, i think they have a batch of fungus infected mollys, velvet infested guppys and finrot ridden angels at the mo :alien: .
When it comes to posting the pics here though, where should i put them if they are to be made into a pinned article  ?

edit: I think a Med article for UK and US fish keepers would also be vey handy, as i live in england but i often get confused when it comes to meds over in the US as we dont have so many of the ones over there, and vice versa.
I think this would be a good community effort as i think it would be good as well if we have fish keepers who have positive experience using the meds in question for their sick fish so they can give input on the doses used, amount of water changes, temp of tank and number of infected fish at the time and how severe they were, so other people can follow the most effective ways of using the meds  .

Im getting new fish so if they do get a disease its pic time.
I hope they dont get a disease but if they do it will help the forums.

are you refering to the A to Z of diseases?
I must say that I was hopeing (at the time) it went in a different directon that it did. It would seem that most people couldn't be bothered...

I think that doing a proper one (a to z) would be of great benifit to all of us, I do still think it should be from personal experiance and not copy and pastes from other places. That way it would be more "real".

Tokis,
If you want , start a thread anywhere then notify a mod and we can pin it and make it "hidden",then update it as you go. You'll probably have to PM the pics and info to a mod as you go so one of us can add them to the thread. Don't worry about bothering anyone, we're happy to help.

Maybe you can use a diagnostic chart. A chart that will point out what the symptoms are and are not. Whether the disease is internal or external. Then lead you to pictures or descriptions of the symptoms. This might be an easier way to pinpoint the disease than listing them alphabetically. Also, a list of medicines, the dosage, warnings, and the type of disease(s) it will cure.

If someone could put together a chart it would be great.

Hmm.. i seem to remember getting a chart like that along with meds for popeye. I don't have it anymore but I'm sure someone out there should!

I believe Interpet meds come along with a similar chart in the med box, although it lists the majority of fish deseases out there, it can be pretty limited at times and can lead to wrong diagnosis in my experience on occasion- it doesn't really deal with internal parasites, physical injurys, ammonia burns, fish TB and NTD and a variety of bacterial orientated infections, plus some more i cant remember...

I think what would be a good idea is the first get a catalog/list of the deseases with pics, then to write up on symtoms to look for and methods of treating, and then perhaps at the end when we feel satisfied and comfortable with the current product, to then write up a separate chart of symtoms with are linked to various deseases for those who dont want to look through every desease in the log before finding the one they are looking for.
A review guide on meds in the UK and US and the best ways of using them for various deseases plus the deseases they effect and can treat would be very handy as well...
I think it would be good to not just list and write up on on well known or listed fish deseases, but the ones that dont have any specific name or ones that are injury/stress/water quality/enviroment or behavioral related as well  . For example when some species of plecs get bacterial infections, they show a reddening around the joints, while as when mollys get fungal infections it is often down to a lack of salt/minerals in their diet rather than a desease being the root cause- Tetras dying off as well for example, could also be down to lack of numbers in the shoal/group contributing to stress and thus death rather than a direct desease cause of death etc etc. Redding around the gills may be because of ammonia burns rather than a gill infection, or excess silmecoat production in a loach may be down to the presence of salt in the water etc.
There is alot more to sick fish than just deseases, we all agree that the whole point of a desease indentification pinned article is there to help people correctly diagnose their fish and efficiently treat their fish, but it may help as well if we expand this beyond just the common bog standard well known deseases?
So i guess what the finished product could look like would be;
a. Symtoms and pinned article desease map chart
b. Gallery of deseases with scientific and common names with notes on what meds or courses of action to treat the deseases, plus perhaps info on the way the deseases work as well for better understanding.
c. Catalog of un-named infections that effect particular fish and advised treatments as well as pics, like the redding of joints due to bacterial infections in plecs.
d. Physical or enviromental/water quality or behavioral related issues plus info on treating them as well as pics, like treating fish with ammonia burns or corys eroded barbels with bacterial infections from eating off poorly cleaned substrate, or stress like becomming pale caused to nocturnal fish like plecs from lack of cover/darkness during the day etc.

The desease section would also include external parasites like flukes or fish lice, plus others like leaches and harmful insect larvae and perhaps other critters that are somtimes mistaken for nasty critters like planeria?
What to you guys think  ? I think the main course of action right now though is getting a good selection of pics on sick/deseased fish.
