I'm getting a new tank for uni...primarily it was going to be a 10l ish thing.

Well now it's definitely going to be in the 20-30l category.

So I was trying to think of a few small fish or A small fish to go in.

Would a dwarf puffer be ok? Just the one, or would it hassle the shrimp?

I think you'll find it will eat the shrimp, dont quote me but im sure theres problems there lol

i would try them with cherrys or tigers first and not risk the more expensive CRS until i was sure

Hey I didn't think of that. Good idea pippoodle.
Thing is, if I had a choice between the shrimp and the puffer then I'd choose the shrimp. So do you think it'd be easy enough to rehome if it was intent on eating the shrimp?

Im interested in buying some in around 3-4 weeks time, so you never know, I might take them of your hands.

I would be interested in hearing a more definitive answer to this, just setting up a shrimp tank now and a DP would make a nice addition, but I thought they would just wipe out a shrimp colony.

Edited for a very stupid Typo error

Hey...you could always be the one to test it heart worm. I don't even have a tank yet too set up :(
I can't seem to find one the right size. And I'm not paying £40 for a custom build without any of the equipment. *Sigh*

A DP in a shrimp tank means many of the shrimp offspring that you intend to breed will get eaten.

I keep various shrimps in my DP tanks and the populations of the ones that breed (cherries in my case) are kept in check since my DPs absolutely love baby shrimps. My DPs mostly leave the adults alone. They are too lazy to chase the faster shrimps

There is no absolute answer to whether your DP will attack juvie/adult shrimps or not since a lot is down to the actual DPs and also how the shrimps are introduced into the tank. And I can assure you that if they go hungry, they WILL attack even larger shrimps like amanos as this happened to mine when I went on holiday a few years ago  I would test with some cherries rather than CRS like pippoodle said.

Also, just for a bit of additional info, be aware of their diet and read this thread by NMonks.

My feeding plan had been frozen bloodworm on the whole. With the addition of a few snails, live black worm and a bit of prawn. Aswell as any shrimp the puffer could be bothered to catch. So after scrapping prawn does that sound like a reasonable diet?

Though by the sounds of it CRS are going to be a bit too pricey to keep with the DP so...seems like I'll be sticking to a shrimp only environment I think. They're easier to filter anyways I guess, means I can go back to a cheap HOB instead!

Thanks.

In that case its probably not for me unfortunately, I am after a relatively constant supply of shrimp so the lobster can have a treat.

I'll just back up what isnail said by saying that my DPs are very keen on baby cherry and tiger shrimp but pretty much ignore the adults. I guess that makes them compatible, but just don't expect your shrimp to do much breeding!

The diet plan is fine. My problem with shrimps was that a couple of my DPs had developed a taste for baby shrimps so much so that they would not eat anything else. They were ignoring even live worms. Then some kind of anorexia set in. Luckily NMonks posted the thread about Thiaminase at just the right moment and now the two little rascals are eating like a pig again after some aquarium vitamin treatment (ah.. that reminds me I must post to say thanks in that thread ^_^ )

Yes you can IMO.

If you put the shrimp in first, and let them grow a bit, then put the puffer in, it might eye them up. And have a peck, but he should gradually back off. You could try ghost/amano shrimp as they grow larger; but that's my 2 cents ;)
