Going through my iPhoto library and thought I'd share.

These are the guys I usually catch at my house and release outside. Don't know what they are called.

Found this one out in the backyard one day.

This one has a gorgeous web near my catcus on the patio. Can anyone ID him?

Found this nest of babies at my mom's house in Austin.

And here's the mom who gave her life for those spider babies.

Here's a golden silk spider at my friend's place in Granbury, TX.

Thanks for the nice comments. :)

They look nice. I like my tarantula more though. 1st one is a jumping spider, 2nd and 3rd are orb weavers.

Oooh, I'd love to have a tarantula, but I think my plate is already full. Thanks for identifying the spiders.

I stood for ages in my door way when I lived in Houston because there was a big spider on the door frame and I was scared it was going to jump on me - now don't get me wrong, I used to keep pink toed tarantulas, I'm not scared of spiders, but the cleaning lady wasn't there and being a Brit, I liked to have her identify everything before I knew whether it would kill me or not.....anyway, I decided I was being stupid and what possible motivation could it have for jumping on me for no reason. so I walked into the apt and right as I went past it, the little blighter jumped off and landed on my shirt! I nearly wet my pants  behaved like a total girl, screamed and ran away.

Good, Sue, real brave.

The last pictures show Argiope aurantia, the big webs can be a nuisance, but the spider itself is harmless.

The one with the red spot on it might be Latrodectus mactans, the Southern Black Widow which is poisonous. In particularly sensitive people, the toxin can kill. They are not aggresive, and normally only bite people by accident if trodden on etc. It is not really clear in the picture, but these spiders don't build the typical beautiful orb webs, rather just a pretty random tangle of threads. Does the red spot have an "hourglass" shape?

You're right the last one is Argiope aurantia, I just looked it up. So it's a black and yellow garden spider and not a golden web spider. Thanks.

Southern Black Widow, huh? but he's green? He is really small (under an 1" legs and all) and has stayed at the corner of the patio. I only saw him one day when I decided to clean up outside. I tried looking at what shape his red spot is, but it's too tiny for me to see. The picture shows it better than in real life because I enlarged it. I do have alot of those orb weavers around here, so maybe he took over someone's web. I think he'll move on soon because we hard some hard winds last night and that web is now busted.

...by the way, great story, Suzie.

OMG i go mental when i see a poxy little british spider scurry across our floor... let alone one of those big mummas!!!

Well done for getting so close and not screeching like a girl!

Mmm, yes, I know, I said...

... but it was not clear from the pictures the style of web. Since the picture might have represented a potentially dangerous species, I thought it provident to ask.
