65 Gallon Tank And I'm Wondering If There Is Still Room For A Smal

Hi, I have a tall, planted, 65 gallon tank that houses the following:
2 baby angelfish(about 1&1/2 inches each)
2 black neon tetras
4 corydoras
2 platys
1 black phantom tetra
1 gold gournami(2&1/2 inches)
1 dward gournami


What do you think, do I still have room for a school of tetras? I'm not sure what kind yet(any suggestions would be nice), but i'm thinking about 8 to 10 smaller sized tetras would make a nice additions to the tank. There is plenty of room to hide(very friendly tank, they all play nice) and/or play in the cave decor, amazon swords and baby water lettuce.

Also, I have a friend who told me not to get the gouramis because they will fight with the angels. This doesn't seem to be the case at the moment. I see them swimming past eachother constantly , with no tell tale signs of stress whatsoever so i'm not sure why he was so adamant against it.

I would also like to get 2 more corys and 1 bristlenose pleco, but I don't know if that would be too many bottom dwellers for one tank.

lol thanks for the quick reply. so by plenty, do you mean I have enough room for the school of tetras, 2 corys and the pleco? i'm worried that if the tank gets too big or when the angels get bigger, there will be space issues. but i'm a novice so I really don't know what to expect.

btw, forgot to mention tank dimensions. which are 36x18x24"tall

theres still plenty of room the real issue you have is the black neons will be eaten as soon as the angels grow large enough also the numbers really need raising for your black phantoms they will be happier in a larger group of 6-8. as for the angels and gourami fighting only time will tell really
but yes theres definately room for another shoal of tetras just not neons with angels rummy nose are good

thanks for the reply! Rummynose is a nice choice, but I was thinking of perhaps getting the congo tetra. I need to do some research on it's habits and if its a schooling fish; I just love the colors. i'm concerned a school of congos might be too much fish for my tank but i'm assuming its not since I get the feeling from the responses here that I have ample room.

One last question, I was wondering if you have to feed fish more when they are young. My angels are far from fry but these 1 1/2" are always looking for a snack. Any time I approach the tank they are the first to reach the top, seemingly quite hungry. I usually feed my fish three times a day, morning afternoon and night but just today I decided to go with two times a day. My sister who worked for petco for awhile told me two times a day is just fine. I use a mix-match of tetramin flakes, frozen bloodworms and sun dried shrimp, using the bloodworms once a week.

yeah congos are a greaT choice a school of 6-8 would be nice


it could help to feed twice a day when little to help with growth but be sure to drive down to one when they grow up, they are supposed to be left wanting moe, indicates you didnt over feed, but i dont really follow any of it

black neons when fully grown are quite big..
we have 4 fully grown large angels and added 24 small neon tetras last week..
and counted 24..
there is also six black neons in the tank for 7 months, all still fine and intact..

saying that i have read posts about peoples angels eating neons but i have never had this happen to me and ive been keeping angels for 5 yrs..

so i just feel i have to stick up for them lol

Angels and neons is an age old tropical debate

Some are adamant that all angels will eat neons as soon as they are physically capable, others say it is a temperement thing. Personally, I think its a combination of those two factors, and the most important factor of how hungry they are!!

it all depends on the individual fish but it does happen from time to time

is the tank 65 UK gallons or US gallons congo tetras are really nice need a lot of swimming space though

Never kept angels and neons together but always heard that if you get the angels small and the neons at the same time and they grow up together then the angels when large will regard the neons as tankmates and not food, as they wouild if neons are suddenly dropped in the tank.

i to wouldn't put smaller tetra's in with angels i once made the mistake of putting in my tank some male guppies my angel thought it was feeding time and chased them until they all hid behind the filter, i had to quickly net them out and put them back into my other tank i am sure they would have been picked off one by one by bert ( the angel fish).
As to regard's of gourami's and angel fish i personally have never had a problem and i have had noen gourami's(past) and larger gold gourami's (present) in withe bert and have never had any problems at all.

I think you should definitely up your Black Phantoms. In my experience of them, they are shy fish, and only do really well in a large group of 6-8. Try and get a mix of males and females (females have the red anal fin), they will swim about all together and look lovely. 3 males / 5 females, or 2 males / 6 females.

I think you could also do with upping your Neons to a group of 6-8.

Tetras are a schooling fish and do look best/act more naturally in larger groups.

You also have room to add 3 or 4 more Corys, and then you could add a BN plec as well I think.

What sort of filteration do you have? If you overfilter and do regular 30%+ water changes each week I think you can afford to overstock a little anyway.

When chosing to put angels with smaller tetras, you just have to ask yourself "Will I be upset if I wake up in the morning and all my tetras are missing?", if the answer is yes, then don't mix them. It works for some, not for others. IMO the main concern would be the possible cost; a school of tetras is an expensive snack .

In 'the wild' Angel's prey on smaller fish at night, where their body form lets them resemble a floating leaf (a little like the leaf fish), fish that 'may' be vulnerable are those that hug the bottom in a docile state during the night and are small enough to be consumed. However, in a captive environment, most fish get 'very' well fed (hence growing so large/living so long), and so this kind of behaviour should not normally be exhibeted.

Just finished my tank off with a school of x-ray tetras, hopefully I won't have to buy another fish for awhile. I'm still worried my tank is overstocked, to me it just looks sorta crowded. This is a 65 US gallon tank, 36x18x24"tall and it is well planted(amazon swords, anubias, java fern, jungle val, rotala indica and a huge onion plant). For filtration i'm using a tetraEX70. I do plan on getting another to overfilter the tank I guess.

I gave away my gold gourami to LFS as it was fighting with the dwarf gourami. I also gave back the black phantom.

Current stock is the following:
2 baby angel fish(maybe an inch big)
1 dwarf gourami
7 black neon tetras
8 x-ray tetras
2 platys
3 skunk corys
2 green corys
2 albino corys

So that's it... did I go overboard stocking it with two schools of tetras? I would have gotten congo tetras, but they seem to be larger than most tetras and need swimming space; I went with the much smaller and quite cute x-ray tetra. If I did get anything else, I'd love to get a smaller pleco for algae, maybe a rubber-lip pleco which would love my driftwood. Rubber-lip seems to be the smallest pleco available

After reading up on corys I realize I should have gotten a group of the same species. Catching them is quite troublesome so I hope they will be fine as is. They do seem to play with eachother often. Any comments or criticism would be appreciated. I will post pics asap. Thanks.
