60 Litre Stock

My test kit is just a strip that i swill in the tank!!!! So i should change half my water?? Shall i do this now??

Test strips are notoriously inaccurate, you should invest in a liquid testing kit but yes you should consider a large water change, larger than half.

Hate to say it, but the guys are right. The opaline should go as a matter of urgency, I used to have a pair of golden gouramis (essentially a gold coloured opaline) and one of them bit the tail off one of my mollies! LFS's will tell you nigh on anything to shift stock, and i'd also recommend pygmy cories if your insistent on keeping a group in a 60L.

Right thanks im going to do this now!!! How often shall i do these large changes????

With a nitrite reading of 1mg/l, from a test strip that is more than likely under-reading, you need to remove all the tank water (after turning off filter and heater) except enough to just cover the fish at the bottom of the tank.

Refill with similar temp, dechlorinated water.

My corys will grow to 7 cm i am told??

Hi Andy-oc :)

Please don't feel bad about this. Many of our members have started off the same way. I'll move your thread over to the Your New Freshwater Tank section where the members will help walk you through the entire cycling process. In the end, it will turn out to be worth all your effort. :D

Thanks i have basicly been suduced into spending loads of money on an unsafe tank :(

Yep..they could do, they're fabulous fish to watch when they get more 'mature' and fuller. To get them like this you need to start doing water changes as and when your now twice daily water tests tell you. Get your tank water the same as your de-chlorinated tap water.

Terry.

Thanks guys where can i find a detailed break down of how i should do this??

You should get a proper test kit such as an API Master Kit which cost's about $30 in the fish store but only $18 online. Let me know if you need a link for a cheap but good kit to work with. Oh, and you should probably be changing about half your water everyday.

The Opaline Gourami is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too big for your tank, they get to be 5-6 inches long. It will start to bully the other fish if it's a male in such a small tank. Mollys are also too big for your tank. You could change them out for Platys, which are colorful, smaller & fun to watch. Up the number of Corys to at least 6, depending on what kind they are of course.

The fish store should def. know better than to advise that stock for a 16 gallon tank.

Well as i say the store honestly have advised me on all of this so far and the sign above the mollies said 5 cm full adult!! Opaline 10 cm very peed
