I wouldnt get an ornate mate get a senegal and look around for maybe a palmas or delhezi ornates get big I know a guy whos ornate ate a 9" arowana.

I agree. Ornates get pretty darn big and arent so flexible. Delhizi's look nice and one would do great in that tank without limiting your stock too much. I would recommend a Severum or some type of Geophagus as a centerpiece fish. Theyre peaceful but get large and can hold their own. You might be able to do a Black Ghost Knife but i'm not too sure about that one.

i have a 16" ornate and 22" fire eel for sale james :good:

yer but you live miles away and don't think my dad would appreciate taking me all that way to get them :)

plus i wanna watch something grow you know more sense of achievement !

but thanks tho

if you bought a juvenile fire eel, it would take A LONG TIME, and trust me when i say A LONG TIME, to grow to around 20 inches.

Well Im not too sure. Cane, when did you get your fire eel, and how was it when you got it? I dont think it would take all that long.

They are slow growers. It will take years before it out grows that tank I dunno why people are telling him not to get it no one said anyting to me and I had a fire eel in the exact tank james has as he bought my tank.

Yes they do grow slowly, but not that slow. It will become huge at some point. I wouldnt keep any eel in that tank once it gets past about 18" but thats what I would be ok with. I think (like you have said) that getting a young one is better :good:

thats why i will be buying a small one.

the one i shall buy is about 6 inches not even that i think so it will be along time before it ourgrows my tank and Mark said he would take it from me if it did :)

Yeah, I saw the other thread. Good luck with it and post some pics up of it :good:

i bet 99% of fire eels get much less than a 5x2x2
imo a tank this size will do one for life
they are not like 2ft arowanas or gar

I dont think 99% fully grown fire eels will be in tanks smaller than 5x2x2's personally. And, even if they are, that doesnt make it right.

so basically your saying i shouldn't get one ?
No, Im not. I just think, a potentially, fully grown 28" fish shouldnt be kept in a 5x2x2, which seems to be what cane and mark would have no problems with. I do think you should get one, they are amazing fish, but just consider it if you havent got a permenant home for it (which you have though because mark offered to take it if it gets too big...). If you didnt have anywhere for it to go SHOULD it get too large (personally, too large would be maybe 18-22") then I would advise strongly against it (because theyre hard to rehome at those sizes).

if you had gotten a juvenile, i would say 10 years for it to get to around 28 or 30 inches, which is the max length, if given the space. in a 5x2x2, such lengths may not be reached. 25 or 26 inches would probably be the max.
