350 Gallon Tank

who ever said something about the chemicals in fish making them uneatable, think about oils in the sea. we still eat sea fish. they filter stuff like that from their blood.

Ya, I know you won't eat it... but what do you mean by "humanely dispose"? If you mean what I think you mean, that seems awfully cruel, and to do it just because a fish got too big.

Well...I would certainly try to rehome it first, but if that fails (and it probably would), I would indeed kill it painlessly. It is a much better alternative than releasing it into the wild. What would you recommend I do?

Just keep on trying to rehome it! Dont kill it that would be awfull! It would be crulty! It would be just plain horrible!!!

I have no problem killing fish for a good reason, but buying a fish that will get too big for you to provide a happy home is not a good reason. As stated above, just keep trying to rehome it. Someone will have a pond or something like that it can go in, you just gotta keep trying. Also try your local public aquarium. All of the large catfish at mine were provided from home aquariums (red tail cats, shovelnoses, that sorta thing).

We are all jumping the gun on this, anyway. It is only a foot long at the present and there is not much reason to believe it will outgrow a 350 gallon tank.

I feel as though I saved the fish since it was in a twenty gallon tank with about fifteen other pacus in Petsmart. How many of those do you think are in a tank as large as mine? And I live in a temperate zone, so ponds are not an option.

Would you put a miserable dog out of its misery? I would. I would also put a miserable fish out of its misery. I'm not saying I would end its life on a whim. I would only do it as a last resort...if the fish was completely miserable. I hope you understand what I'm trying to say.

yeah, compared to the people i have encountered that have three pacus in a ten gallon tank, this pacu has got heaven. and i would put a fish out of its misery, were it truly miserable. but you have to consider that this guy went out and bought a 350 gallon tank for this fish, instead of dumping it in a river somewhere. that's pretty admirable.

I'm not too concerned with this specific fish, I was just surprised by you saying you'd kill it if it were to outgrow the tank. I'm fine with putting a fish down if it truly is miserable, but if you make the fish miserable, that's no excuse.

I would try selling it on aquabid or ebay. That would probably work. And I do doubt it will out grow an 350 gallon tank, but you never know. And no matter what, I would not kill it. The poor thing isnt even really sick  ! You dont just kill a dog just because you cant find a home for it, now that would be crulty!

i dont know were you got the idear that a ray will always cover them self with sand all the time

only sick rays do that

i dont think the filteration will be good enought for any large fish

I'm sorry to give you this link...

Newsround dog report

Animals are put down all the time because there are so many - and so few people wanting to give them homes.

Putting down a fish in my opinion isn't cruel - as long as it has been given a decent few years.

Beautiful tank! Nicely done. If it were mine, I'd convert it into a huge planted tank with hundreds of smaller shoaling fish. But as you already have gorgeous big fish - then obviously this isn't an option for you. Another plant that I'm pretty sure fish find 'bitter' is Java fern, and your herbivores may not touch it?

Paul.

Thanks for the kind words. I may just do a well planted tank with smaller shoaling fish in the future. I do really like them. But, I only have two years of experience keeping fish, so I'm not sure I'm yet ready for CO2 tanks, fertilizers, etc...

I tried tying java fern to rocks, but the pacu immediately started eating the roots of the ferns (never the leaves) as if it was longing for some delicious java fern roots. Then I tried wedging the ferns in between rocks so the pacu couldn't get to the roots, but the pacu just pulled the ferns out from between the rocks and started devouring the roots again! I think I might be out of luck with plants so long as the pacu is in there. But, that is fine with me, since I really enjoy the pacu. They are fantastic fish, very energetic, and never boring.
