250L Aquarium Ideas

im wondering what to put in my 250L tank. i quite like the idea of different species of gourami and swordtails. what would you do?
ohh and i also want it to have lots of live plants in it so no silver dollars or severums e.c.t

im guessing the tank is something like a 48 x 18 x 18? thats a good base for something

if i could fit another 4ft tank in the house i would go for a chilid tank, lots of rocks etc, im pretty sure they are cool with plants but i would check this out because im not 100% sure. would be great if you could start a thread for this project once you know what you want to do.

i am not really a fan of african chilids. they are nice to look at but i just find them a bit boring because most of them are the same shapes and sizes just different colours.

Then you need to be introduced to Tanganyikans!

Tanganyikans are overlooked so much, yet they are beautiful fish with great character and come in all shapes and sizes.

Hey handsome missed you too and so glad to see you on here still
I think Tangs are fantastic, set a tank up for them at work a few weeks ago in the hope of encouraging more people to consider them. Have never understood why they don't sell that well, they've just as much character as any other cichlid!

250 liters is a pretty nice size for a comm of some kind, if its going to be planted how about a shoaling tank with a few feature open water cichlids like Festivums or Angelfish.

Isn't there a risk in mixing several species of Gouramis together? Having not got any Anabantoids yet (but I have an African Bushfish planned), I was under the impression that they generally do not enjoy finding fellow Anabantoids in their community tank.

A 250l is a decent size for a biotope community, so perhaps you could do an Asian theme built around your favourite Gourami species.

hi, thanks for the ideas guys. what do you think of getting one species of fish and having lots of different types of them, if you get me. kind of like pearl gouramis, honey, kissing, dwarf, 3spot, opline , you get where im going with this. but im not sure a tank full of gouramis would be smooth.

Each of those Gouramis you just listed are different species. I don't think that would work so well because some of them are aggressive where others are not.
You could go with maybe 4 or 5 of one of the larger ones you just listed, the 3 Spot or the Opalines etc. I'm not sure but don't kssing gourami get very big, I'm probably wrong, someone correct me .

Kissing Gourami can get to about 8" so maybe a little too big.
You could keep several Gourami together provided you stock mainly with females and very few males. Keeping the tank heavily planted with plenty of decor should also help to keep aggression down.

hmm...well i do have loads of plants in one of my 54L, ready to be put into my 250L. any other ideas except gouramis, how about angel fish. i have never been much of a fan but a few large ones with lots of plant could look quite cool. discus are a no. i wouldnt trust myself. haha.
