2/4Ppm Ammonia In Tap Water!

I have just moved all my aquariums. This means i had to do about a 90% water change in all the tanks.

I just found two dead fry in my tank, so thought i should check the water parameters. I have between 2 and 4 PPM ammonia in each tank. I tested the tap water which has the same.

So how can i get rid of ammonia without doing a water change? Dont want all my fry dying!!

Seachem prime for now, or another dechlorinator/water treatment. The ammonia should be soon used up by your A & N bacs. Dont panic.

Is that from a hot water tank?

Nope. Dont have a hot water tank - it just goes through an inline boiler.

I've put in a dech. and hopefully it'll go away soon!

If its not from.a tank & is mains water you need to ring your water company Rorie, 2-4 ppm of ammonia is unacceptable when the legal limit for tap water is 0.5ppm!

Did you use the same dechlorinator to dechlorinate as you did to de-toxify somewhat the ammonia?

I have just added some dissolved sodium thiosulphate to the aquarium in the hope that it will help.

I live in an old victorian building, so there is a chance it could be coming from the pipes, but it is very sporadic as to when it appears.

Sorry, ignore me, I wasn't thinking properly, it is probably a case of a leaking pipe contaminating the water supply.
