Wanted healthy and good coloured fish ,Worth looking around for.
They are a biy shy at the moment,I added a couple of coconut caves,i drilled a few small holes in the top and tied moss onto them.

Would like a few small fish that stay at the top of the tank.Maybe a small shoal of 5 or 6,any ideas?I am getting close to my tanks limit so need to be small and not messy.

If you really want fish that stay at the very top - hatchetfish.

Dwarf hatchets can be delicate and do best in groups of 10 or more, although sometimes ok from 6+.. they may jump as well, so a tight fitting coverglass is a must.

Really enjoyed reading your thread nicolaisam. Very interesteing and refreshing to read about someone actually listening to forum members advice and also doing things right. Glad you took the time to drive to another LFS and got what you wanted, it's a pretty poor LFS that won't sell you 1M and 2F Apisto's as this is often advised by alot of people.

I have to agree with KK on the Honeys, they really are beautiful fish. I think i am going to get a group of them today for my tank along with some more Cardinals. :good:

Congratulations on a wonderful tank and being such a caring fish keeper!

Thanks for reading and for the compliments. :good:
I have 2 other tanks but they have shrimp in them. Not had fish for nearly 20 years.
The fish shop in question was retailer of the year 2009/2010,massive stock, but i wasnt happy with the quality of there Apistogrammas.

Honey gouramis look nice, any other type or colours of Gourami that are suitable,do they get agressive?

Not keen on the look of hatchetfish.

My tank only has a hood, not a cover plate.

You can get a yellow morph variation of the honey gourami. You could try a pair of Dwarf Gourami's, they're available in blue and orange/blue/silver.

Suprised that your LFS wouldn't sell you 3 then if they were retailer of the year. :/

My plan for the honey gourami's didn't go well. came away with 3 strawberry and cream mickey mouse platties instead

They said they buy them in pairs,so they sell them in pairs.

Will take a look in a few LFS and see what they have.

Were the Platties an impulse buy

If you want to go for more interesting fish, there are peaceful Betta species and gourami species, but they're rare and will take looking for! For example, I currently keep pairs of Pseudosphromenus dayi (gourami), have kept Betta simplex (bought them from a breeder in Wales), Trichopsis pumila and Trichopsis vittata, and want to keep Parosphromenus filamentosus (also gourami).. which are all peaceful surface dwelling fish.

The problem is that most common gouramis and Bettas are aggressive as hell, so make poor tank mates for most fish or one can keep only one or two at a time.

Had a look at Honey Gouramis,Very nice,Thinking a Trio.

One of my LFS has new stock of Gouramis coming in this week. Will have a look but will leave them for another week before buying.

Will have a look in the LFS that had the Apistogrammas, see what they have.

I wanted something with different colours hence why i liked the HG's but then the Platties jumped out at me for £1.50 each. Fitting in very well at the moment but they have some growing to do as they're in with 2 adult Angels and a fully grown Ellioti!! Also bought another 5 Cardinals to add to my surviving 3. Hoping they do better than last group of 9 from which 6 died within 2 days. They're no where near the same colour as my own 3 but they're all together very tightly indeed. They're in a 125 litre tank so i am thinking of eventually ending up with somewhere around 20. When i rehome my Rainbow Cichlids with a fellow member on here i am going planted in there too! :)
