150G Stocking

Brents jag is a beast, always admired his, but i miss my brutis  If i had the space i would have got him his own tank, he would attack anything, lived well for two years then decided he would own my 150us...So from my exsperience and boltys who used to own the xhantic male, we would reccomend single specimens,,,,His xhantic male would and did kill four females in his time, he sold him to a member of m fk.....Amazing jag, only one colouration in the world...

Have a look at him,

 Stunning. Yours was a real stunner.
Do you think any other fish in a 150G would be to much then? I would really like one but not sure on having a 150G just for 1 fish. Or would it be best if i just stuck to 2 types rather than having
1 Jaguar
1 Veija
1 White Spot Pike
2 Lima shovel nose

If i went for
1 Jaguar
2 White spot Pikes

Wow quite a change in direction! What about keeping a single Jag? Cut down the aggression during breeding time and reduces any problems with fry.

Just thinking you could do a jag and an other bruiser maybe some kind of veija - then do a large rock pile/wood tangle - and a group of mid sized pikes but the decor would provide cover where the larger cichlids could not get into - I think hardscaped retreats could be the answer in this tank but they would need to be very much fixed down in someway to stop the jag and co from shifting them over.

Wills ive been thinking about it and might give the rock/wood pile a go, What type do you think would work best?
I was thinking maybe
1 Jaguar
Group of Pikes
3 Senegal Bichirs

Depends on the width of the tank, if it's 2 ft wide something like a ornate will be fine, grow fast get to a decent size plus they're a pretty agressive bichir so should handle themselves ok.

The tanks 5x2x2, ill keep a eye out for some then Cheers.

Well ive got a big problem. I filled the tank up a few days ago to see how the heaters would cope. Im using 800w of heaters plus the tanks insulated with 2 1/2 inch think Styrofoam on the back and sides. The temp still wont go above 22c. I could add more heaters but i think thats going to cost a fortune. I think im just going to have to wait until i have enough room to bring it inside before i turn it into tropical. Its got me thinking about doing a cold water riverine tank on a bigger scale though.

Awww #40##! I have to admit seeing some peoples reports of how big tanks are coping in garages has put me off somewhat.....

Is there no where inside that you could put the tank? The riverine idea could certainly work though - Goats 5x2x2 is set up in a similar manor. Lots of interesting choices in there.

OR MAJOR BRAIN WAVE!!! Gymnogeophagus it would be perfect for them!! And a pretty decent compromise for you as to your liking of cichlids and the requirements your tank can provide but in that kind of set up their cooling period would be perfect :)

Yeah it is a bit of a pain. Im going to try insulating the garage a bit better before i completely give up on tropicals but its not looking promising.
Not really theres not really any space for it plus my mums not to keen on the idea of such a big tank in the house.

I do like Goats tank but i was thinking a few bigger fish rather than the smaller fish like he has.

So far ive had a couple of ideas i could go for something like
1 Perch
1 Golden tench
6 Roach
i know eventually they would get to big but i know someone with a big pond that could look after them after there to big.

Or maybe
A pair of Snakeheads and a type of catfish like Clarias batrachus

Thats another option, What type would work best? Are they similar in care as Geophagus?

and i thought i was bad at changing my mind on stocking.......
Haha, Its just theres so many options i dont know what to do. ATM im thinking either a Native fish tank with 5 Perch and a big group of gudgeon and minnows or a pair of snakeheads.

an english river tank is something i have always been tempted to do, there are some great species in our rivers etc. im not sure how legal it is to go and collect them though  perch would look fantastic and have to be one of my favourite UK fish :good:

an lfs near me have a tank set up with about 5 mirror carp in and it looks stunning :good:

Ive wanted to do one for a while and thought now would be a good time to give it a go.

Perch are one of my favourite fish to catch and look stunning especially when in groups.

Ive done some reading on it and aslong as its not private land it seems like you can collect from there using a rod aslong as you have a rod licence but if its still water, somewhere that is owned or somewhere that has been privately stocked its classed as steeling.

I would love to have a tank big enough to keep carp but with them maxing out at about 80lb i doubt it will ever happen.
