15 Year Old Seawater....

In 1994, I sold bottled sea water from my litle pet shop I had at the time (mostly) to indigenous Black Tribes here in SA, who traditionally drink sea water to make them vomit and "Detox" in this way and to remove bad spirits from their homes.

I still have around 600 of these (200ml) bottles of sea water stored outside (in sun, rain, and wind)... I have recently used the water to hatch brine shrimp in and it worked well for that purpose.

I saw yesterday on google, that in order to create brackish water, you can mix sea water with fresh water. (I've just acquired some freshwater shrimps and apparently, they will live and breed in freshwater, but the fry will not survive unless it is in brackish water)

I've opened one of these bottles and it has no odour, so I assume it'll be fine to make (create) my brackish water.... How many (200ml) bottles should I add to a 24 x 12 x 12" tank to have a brackish mixture.??

With regards to how many bottles you should add depends on the salinity of the water, if it is 1.026 SG which is more or less what sea water is, then 200ml's of this sea water to 1000ml's of freshwater if my calculations are correct, so you would need around 50 bottles to 50 litres to create a specific gravity of 1.005. Once added together it should create 60 litres of water which is the volume of a 2*1*1

So in effect you're saying that a sg of around 1.005 will represent "brackish" water??

Oh!... & also, can I pour 50 bottles into the freshwater tank with them in there, or should I add... say.... 3 bottles per day over a period??

yes 1.005 is medium salinity SG, which species of shrimp is it? is it amano? or another species?

I would up it gradually so 3 bottles per day should be fine.

I've narrowed it down to Macrobranchius Carcinus..... Largish, Uninterresting. (but mine)!!

Brackish is any range of salty water, from 1.001... i suspect the shrimp would be best at 1.003.
