well you want one or two species with larger numbers.

cardinals
Neons (all types)
rummynoses
harlequins (inc copper but not as nice IMO)

any shoaling fish really.

how about some figure 8 puffers?

there might me a bigger one than that, but F-8's look and act amazingly

what external filter do people reccomend for this size tank??

snakeheads? not sure which; but heard they are great to keep

ermmm, a huge tank with dwarf puffers

or a tank with:

Rummy nose tetras & any other type (you could have 3-4 types) like silver tip and cardinal and xray or phantom
BN plecos
German Blue Rams / Gold Rams / Long Finned German Blue Rams (a Pair)
a few SAE's (i like them, just preference)
