Dwarf cichlids are simply small species of cichlid that only grow to 2-3 inches. Other cichlids can grow to over a foot.
Rams are a dwarf cichlid.

The shell dwellers and leleupi are dwarf cichlids but they are from the Rift Lakes in Africa and require hard alkaline water.
The rams are a dwarf cichlid from South America and come from soft acid water.

If you have hard water (GH above 300ppm) you keep Rift Lake cichlids.
If you have soft water (GH below 150ppm) you keep rams and Apistogrammas.

If you have hard water but want soft water fish, you can use reverse osmosis, distilled or rain water and mix it with the hard tap water to get softer water.
