Well you could take her to your LFS and ask her what looks appealing and then come home and show her how to research the fish and how appropriate it may be. Never any harm showing a child the importance of buying fish responsibly.

she has been doing this with me from the start, she and her bro(6yr old) never cease to amaze me with what they pick up from trips to lfs/listening to me and mum talking. i brought a pair of oscars home last week and they were panicking in case i put them in with the small fish 'they'll eat them dad you cant do that'

Well I meant it, seriously I did.
Everyone here will agree with me on this one, but how many times have you been in a LFS only to hear "Daddy, I like that one, buy me that one!" or even better "I want a nemo, buy me a nemo!".
So very rarely do you see a young child in a LFS that isn't banging on the glass or shouting at their parents to buy them that pretty betta to go with their nemo-look-alike tiger barbs.

It's just so refreshing to hear a story of responsible pet owners, especially of that age, just that one little "no daddy, they can't go in there, they'll be eaten" signals that there is hope for human life after all.

Or it could just be my area..Joys of Essex..

not just essex ,i feel your pain mate, i live in a small town in the north of ireland called ballynahinch. And while the majority are decent people, there is the loud minority, bigoted, lazy and frankly illiterate sub species who make me fear for the future of our race. However its important to remind ourselves that there are good and moral people out there( me and you ) and that in the end its worth the effort.
