10G Possibly Mine

hi my brother got a 55G tank so he might be giving me his 10G aquarium. So if I were to get it, I would probably put my Betta iun there and I wanted to get him tank mates so when I first heard that I might get it, the first thing that popped into my head was ADF's so I was thinking of getting a couple of those. but with 10G of space I was thinking of getting more than 2 species, so I was wonderin what I should get with those 2 species?

Maybe some apple snails or ghost shrimp would be good with your Betta

Means when the tank has fully cycled and the filter is handling the tank well.

I'm sorry but what did you mean by let the tank mature?

I meant that the corys won't much like brand new sand but also make sure the tank is cycled but you know about that i guess, if not check in the beginners part of the forum

No. The betta and ADF's will be fine, but the albino "catfish" by which I presume you mean cories? will need both a bigger tank and a bigger group, they are social fish and like to have as many numbers as possible to feel safe.

Diamond tetras will be too large for a ten gallon, adn will nip the bettas fins to shreds. Being tetras they also prefer large groups and will also need a bigger tank.


If you want a small midwater fish that is more likely to work with the betta, try MALE endlers livebearers. A group of 6 will be fine.

You need to cycle your filter for at least one month before adding any fish to your tank. In the beginners section is a stickied post on cycling and the ways to do it.



An asy way to cycle your filter without having to use liquid ammonia is to keep your filter in your brothers tank (with fish of course) for ONE MONTH, preferably more. This will make sure your filter grows a good colony of flter bacteria and will be able to deal with the waste produced by your betta and frogs ect.

The longer and more complicated way to do it is using liquid ammonia which is described in the beginners section.

Er, what's time got to do with anything? All you're waiting for is a bacterial colony capable of converting ammonia to nitrate- usually 5ppm, which is plenty sufficient for a fully stocked tank. That doesn't take a specific amount of time- it could be a couple of weeks, it could be a couple of months if you're very unlucky.

But, saying that, since you're going to be moving the betta over anyway, you've nothing to lose and plenty to gain by just moving the betta, and old filter media, over to the 10g straight away.

I have kuhli loaches in my ten gallon with a betta and they are very active and fun to watch. I would recommend them if you have sand substrate as they love to burrow. I also have pygmy corys in there, but they are inactive and I would not keep them with a betta again.

and I looked up kuhlis and pygmis on google images they look nice I just need sand, thats a hastle!

I think some cherry barbs would be okay in a ten gallon, but not sure about putting them in with a betta. I've heard reports where they're fine but also reports where they didn't get on. Switch to sand and get kuhlis, you know you want to Sand means you have more options for bottom dwellers.

Cherry barbs would grow too large for a 10 gal, and while supposedly the more peaceful of barbs, I wouldn;t trust them with a betta at all even if the tank was big enough.

yeah I might want to go and get sand for them but the only problem is is cleaning sand to go in a tank is such a hastle.
