10G Betta Tank, Maybe A Few Catfish?

You can have corys, just stick to smaller ones such as sterbai (as roadmaster mentiond).

A small group of corys and a betta in a 10gal will be fine

Ok so would 5 Sterbai Corydoras be ok? I keep reading that they must be groups of 3, or upwards of 4, or upwards of 6. So much subjective information!

I think I will buy some 15kg play sand from argos today and give it a very good clean and figure out how to go about making the switch!

I usually do a weekly water change of 25-30% so I hopefully shouldn't have to change my routine and I'm going back to Uni in late September so I shall get my Dad to takeover whilst I'm gone!

A group of 4 would be fine, 5 would be better. And I can't honestly see any issues from having 5 sterbai and a betta if it's planted, however it would almost definitely need strict weekly changes.

Just out of interest... why aren't the fish going with you? Maybe I'm the only person crazy enough to do it, lol. But my fish are going back to uni with me when I go.
I'm taking a 35l (pair of apistogramma hongsloi) and a 60l (shrimp/snail tank).

Well it is a 10g and it's moderately planted! So the Betta and Cory's will all have decent cover and alot of Nitrates should be consumed by the plants.
I'm just curious, when ppl say I have a 20g or I have a 30g, do they mean that there is that amount of water in there or that it could hold that amount if you were to fill it to the brim with no decor? LOL

Anyway... I can't take my tanks to Uni! It's like a 4-5 hour drive and I'm staying in Halls of Residence! I just think it would be much safer and less stressful for the fish to stay here at home. My dad knows what he is doing, he has kept loads of fish and only has a tank of WCMM at the moment so it should keep him on his toes!

Where do you go to Uni?

Hmm, well it'll take quite awhile for the fish to reach adult hood anyways, maybe try with 4 sterbai with the thought that you can add a 5th in the future if you want to.
Then keep an eye on things and if all seems well when they're all fully grown you can add a 5th

And yeah, halls of residence suck. Or well... they're good, but very restrictive. My halls really felt like home, but I'm so so glad to be out of catered accomodation and to own more that just a room... and be able to have my fish back

I go to Nottingham Uni, it's 40mins down the M1 at most. And just over an hour door to door from here to there. So moving the fish/shrimp etc wont be a problem for me.

I've been trying to convince my other half that we could afford a mortgage (which we could if we can get a deposit together). With how much student rent is I think my main motivator behind that is that I can settle my fish somewhere lol. Oh well, till I have a spare 10k or finish my degree (n get a graduate mortgage) it's going to have to remain a dream *sigh*

My LFS has advised me that Leopard Corydoras are ok to go in the aquarium with my Betta if I lower the tank temp to 26C.

They only have a few left.

What do you guys think! They are small!

They're still on the larger side for corydoras... I wouldn't put them in.

Ok well after doing research and looking at LFS stock I decided to go with 5 Panda Corydoras. It says on the forum FAQ's that bettas need 74-82F and Pandas can live in 68-78, thriving at 73-75 so I've stuck the heater thermostat to 75F. Should be nicely in the range for the Pandas as well as the Betta.

The substrate has all been changed to sand now and the Cory's are currently going around in there little group digging through the sand. My Betta isn't paying them any attention! Phew!
