I bought a Jack Dempsey today at my LFS. He is about 1" long and is in a 100 US gallon tank. For the past hour he has been hiding behind the filter and not moving away. He is still alive but I dont know if it is just stress from the change or what. My water parameters are pH 7.6, nitrate 20 ppm, nitrite is at 0.5, hardness is 120 ppm, alkalinity is 120 ppm. Does anybody have ideas about what is wrong?

Whats your Ammonia? You need to do a 25% water chagnes as any amount of Nitrite is deadly, and .5 wont do him any good. He is also probably stressed, being just introduced. Whar else is in the tank? How long has it been set-up? Is it cycled?

i have an oscar and a pair of convicts. I moved him into my hospital tank a few hours ago and left the house for a while. I have the hospital tank in the cabinet of my 100. So I opened it up and he swam back behind the filter. So I am assuming he is ok. I guess he is just nervous in his new home.

Uhh, no he is being bullied, you shouldnt ever add such a tiny guy into a tank with a pair of cons and a oscar. I would take him back immeadiatley.

well the oscar and convicts are in the 100, the jd is now in my hospital tank

Yeah, but they have territory's and the jack will have to be atleast 6 inches to even have a chance. Take him back, and if you really want a jack, purchase a few BIG ones. Or else they'll get slaughterd.
