Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could help me come up with a fish... either brackish or fresh water, that will be ok complete alone in a ten gallon tank. No tank mates at all. Im looking for something big enough to see but small enough to be able to move around freely. It will be an overly filtered tank so messy fish are fine. I thought i had one the other day until my dreams were shattered lol (figure 8). I would really like to do something some what agressive like oscar but i know they get WAY to big for ten gallons. So if anyone can think of anything please let me know (no bettas please)

Thank You,

Alex

Well, an African Butterflyfish could possibly work.

That's all I can think of.

a small coal grunter or jungle perch but not sure what you have in the US along those lines.
Purple spotted gudgeon (mogurnda sp)
Bullrout
Green terror (Aequidens rivulatis)

A green terror would be ok? as in the chilid? i wanted one but was told the tank would be to small.... as far as those others have never heard before and i have a tendancy to study every fish in the lfs's frequently.... ok daily but dont tell anyone. i really like the look of the Bullrout but i know ive never seen those before.

a green terror cichlid will be fine in a 10g by itself. They don't swim that much and you aren't going to breed them or keep any other fish with it so as long as you keep the water fine it should be happy. Just start off with a small fish and let it grow into the tank.

Most of the more unusual fishes will have to be ordered in by your LFS. Maybe next time you are down that way ask them if they can get any of those in and see what they have to say.

thats what im going to do. I really like Bullrout so im gonna look up the scientific name and start calling around tomorrow if they cant help me then im gonna go with the green teeror. Thanks Collin as always you have been very helpful.

Forget Green Terror! They need more space so they can show their natually behavior not in small tank do nothing...what about Pike Livebearers? Get two males and they are awesome predator! Bullrout are much rare in aquarium trade so its pointless for search for them. But what about pirate perch? They reach only 5 inch and do well in planted tanks. They looks like sunfish. You can put two pirate perch in 10gal. What about Mudminnows? Google it and let us know about what you thinks about mudminnows and pirate perch.

Colin, I don't agree with some advice of yours lately.

they are nice, but i still like the bullrout better as well as the green terror. No offense but what are your qualifications on fish keeping? i have seen collins which is why i trust his opinion but know nothing of yours. Now i was told that same thing by others so im just wondering what your qualifications are not that im doubting you???

Well I hate to see full grown green terror cramped in the 10gal tank and it will be bored to death. For bullrout, they are too hard to find and are not often kept by aquarists so I think you are better off with purple spotted grudgeon. I only cares about the fish's welfare as they should have great life without have stresses all time or being stuck in small 10gal tank. But there are lots of species that's suited for your 10gal tank. Just not green terror or bullrout. What about Blue lobster or Tiger crayfish or Froceps crayfish? (Not sure how to spell Froceps)

well what does others think??? I want more opinions and im not to keen on anything you brought up. Thou i have thought about crayfish in the past. ans again qualifications??? im not trying to be a jerk but i wanna make sure you have credibility as ive never seen you post before??? thou im sure you have.

Can't speak for experience, but a green terror grows to around 8 inches long according to every source I've seen. Is your 10g tank standard dimensions? If so, it's probably 9.5 inches deep like mine, leaving the fish no room to turn around. I've seen fish with more clearance than that unable to turn themselves around in their display tank without literally beating their head against the tank wall.

Myself, I wouldn't put anything over 5 inches in the tank - about half of the shortest dimension.

That said, there's an interesting sticky in the oddball forum for dwarf puffers that I've been reading lately. Sounds like they'd meet your aggression desire, and one should be suitable for a 10g tank.

that's quite alright there Butch. You're entitled to your opinion just like everyone else :)
The whole purpose of a forum is to get different people together with different ideas. The more variation the better as far as I'm concerned. Then people can pick and choose and try different things. What works for me doesn't necessarily work for others and vice versa

I have only seen green terrors get to about 5-6inches. I have never seen one bigger than 6 inches and that was an old male in a 6x2x2ft tank. If you get a 1 or 2 inch fish it won't grow that big and will probably stop growing at about 4 inches, which is fine in a 10g tank.

the scientific name for bullrout is Notesthes robusta
