Hey all

Found an old 13 gallon tank in the garage so decided to send it tropical!

As you can see it was in a pretty dire state!

So bin the gravel + elbow grease, hard work and a new plug = one clean tank!

With some new gravel!

Filter and heater was with fine if not a bit dirty both interpret that came with tank. So clean new filter sponge and carbon sponge.

The filter and heater work well which was a nice surprise as did the tank lights with some new bulbs.

Car cleaned, dechlorinated water in, quick start in and now to let it sit for a few days while at work with monitoring to make sure things seem to be starting up and the plants and fish will be ordered to come on Wednesday!

Watch this space!

You ask I deliver. I can't find the shrimps there hiding in the car, they've barely left it!

Nice, always good to see the acculation of hard work come to life :)

I once had a similar tank to that one, was a decent tank to be fair, easy access and pretty straightforward to maintain.

Couple questions though, did you cycle that tank before you added the fish?

Cycling Your First Fresh Water Tank

And the shrimps are likely to be hiding anywhere they can due to the simple fact you have fish that will happily eat shrimps :/

Looks like you have White Cloud Mountain Minnows and a Betta Splenden.
Dont really want to be the bearer of news you might not want to hear but it has to be advised that WCMM prefer cooler waters than bettas.

Bettas Splenden 22.5 to 28C (76F to 82F)

Tanichthys albonubes / White Cloud Mountain Minnow 14C - 22C (57F - 72F)http://www.seriouslyfish.com/species/tanichthys-albonubes/

If am mistaken to the identity of WCMM as your pic is not the sharpest then apologies in advance.

I was following a betta care website and it said the 3 make good tank mates. Shrimps keep appearing running around for a bit. The betta has said hi to them but no nipping or anything.
And we are set at 23 Celsius and everything seems happy. The minnows are amazing to watch as there a school. They are WCMM and iPhone cameras. Don't you love em

I was worried about how the betta face and "neck" are so different from his body

Tbh the betta is the one I see the least! And it was cycled water bought from LFS

Water doesn't cycle. It's the media in your filter that 'cycles' (grows a colony of good bacteria).

Is the water you bought RO (reverse osmosis)? If so, you shouldn't be using that for fish as it's too pure. Fish and plants need some minerals in the water.

Do you have test kits? It sounds to me like your tank is not cycled, so you could be in for some trouble :/

The water and substrate where bought out of a tank from LFS ammonia was 1ppm nitirite 0ppm and nitrate 13ppm as of yesterday will check this evening when home
