Well after much wringing of hands and gnashing of teeth I am now servant to a crown tail betta. I blame it on all the betta keepers here, the pictures of your fish, and glowing recomendations.
So I came across a veil tail, light orange, almost peach, chocolate face, and iridescent white sepal fins. Thought I would hear, 'Clean up at the bettas, we have a drooler.'
I decided when my little plant rehab tank was cycled, if he was still there, i'd get him. Tank's done, he's still there, but skittish and lethargic. So I look at some of the others, all pretty, but no matter where I looked, this smaller, plain red fellow follows me, bowing up with the tenacity of a bulldog. Must have missed the post about the fish choosing you, and not the other way around.
I think he is defective, his tank is on a bookcase between my and my wife's chair and he spends his time trying to get mama's attetion.
Well the other tank is on the other side of my chair, and I am supposed to pay attention to my three spot gourami, not the betta, or the dog and not the fish.
So I blame you all for this.
p.s. sorry no pics, am techno challenged, but learning.

Haha, glad to see we suckered you in lol jk. Anyways good to hear you have taken interest in one. I can't wait to see your betta when you can photo him. As for the cycle of your tank I don't think it is necessary although some keepers here will nit agree. I do water changed daily and I have never had a betta died on me for 5 years now. the main reason is that if I wait to cycle not only will it be a little pointless since he stays in a 3gal but someone might buy him before me.

Well, cycling was for various reasons. Practice in patience, personal preference, and as a plant rehab, wanted the parameters as spot on as could be.
Well, for pics, no camera, and phone is garbage.
As for Bulldog, he is a spade tail/crown tail. Just one color, UGA red, the color and attitude got him the name.

Well the consternation continues, cpu died a while back, and phone won't let me upload pics to flickr. After two layoffs in two years, upgrading is not in the budget.
His color is about the same as your profile pic, Hmongol, but he has gone tame, hard to get him to flare. He is active, and friendly. Whoever moves, he goes to that side of the tank. I have also found out how picky bettas can be. Flake no, betta pellets, he nips at when first popped in but no, put in bloodworms, and get out of his way.

Well, I fuss and fret over each new fish, and never having had a betta, it has been double. But this morning, after taking my wife to work, and the dog taking me for a walk, I woke up the fish.
Blue, my gourami, and the kids, ( the cories ), act like my dog. Neglected and never fed. But turn Bulldog Fred's light on and he has a bubble nest for me.
I know no big deal, but for me, it was like being a 'big boy' and tying my own shoes for the first time.
