You Beta

Oi...this is what happens when someone has more pets then they can afford

I hope you guys know that she's just saying she's going to get a test kit so you'll leave her alone. She actually has no intention of doing so, otherwise it would have been done already...

Please stop getting rabbits and whatever else before you can properly take care of them

I'm sorry to hear of all the deaths. Poor fish :(
Why would you say that. She has full intention of getting a test kit. Jusdt not right now. Test kits are like 50$ and some of us are too young for jobs

The test kit from API that everyone is talking about here is $29 + tax at PetSmart or Petco. They may even have it on Amazon.com for no tax and free shipping.

I really believe that if you are too young to work, you are too young to be a pet owner. One of the things a pet owner needs is money or someone who does have money that will give it to them to take care of their pets without any questions.

FBTgirl definitely needs to get a test kit now before getting anything else and I will also recommend her to get all the medicines necessary to make a first aid betta/fish kit as well.

So your saying that becaseu I am too young for a job, i am not responsible enough to have pets. I have a friggen kitten for gods sacks, and 2 other cats. The Kitten is MINE and although my mom pays for him and his food, your still sying i am not responsible enough for my pets. What would you put in a betta first aid kit?

you can say the cat is yours and take care of it, but its really your parents that are providing. which is good/lucky. just because you dont have a job doesnt mean your not responsible, if your still young. but if you or your parents cant even provide for a little betta, then maybe you should have any

Its not so much a matter of age as it is a matter of maturity. Even fishhandling at the scale FBT would like is a serious matter of responsibility. I have housed and kept gerbils and fish since i was about 11. My parents then paid for the food and bedding and the likes, but i had to work for it. The same goes for my younger brother, who is 12 now and keeps a lizard (kinda) and is often on puppy patrol with our pug. He's still lacking some in the maturity chart due to being a second child and a headstrong boy but he'll figure it out; especially after I leave for college next summer.

Caring for these tanks is full time job (believe it or not). The light needs to have a certain amount of time, the heat needs to be correct, pH, NH3,NO2 and NO3 must be monitored. The tough thing perhaps with this water testing is that most younger kids do not understand the chemical process that leads to these substances that they need to test for, and no ammount of reading can change that.

The best pools are run by those who understand the chemical processes in the background. This same philosophy applies to fish keeping when it comes to water chemistry. I say this because i never quite understood the nececity to test my chemicals until i took Chem my sophomore year. Now i plan to be a biochem major and i completed my AP exam Chem class. So you older people tell this girl she needs to get a test kit because its important, but you need to remember that the concepts behind the Nitro cycle might be a bit beyond wha she can handle. (No offence, FBT, i am not undermining your intelligence, i'm just remarking that the Nitro cycle is an advanced concept and needs to be properly and thouroughly explained).

Now, past that, you guys need to let up. It seems to me like FBT is trying to the best of her ability to care for these creatures and i believe that there is heart behind it. And FBT dear, please take thier advice and make sure that everything you have is correct and functining for your pet's optimum benefit.

And i'll stop now. But guys, dont flame her.

I have been into fish since August of last year. I have made quite a few bad mistakes, but I realize that everybody will, and we must learn from them. I did not get a test kit until 5 months ago and my fish are great. I have had not as many deaths (none in the last four months) I culture copepods and nematodes in my tanks, and the moral of my story is that, as repeated before, we all make fish mistakes, and must move on. I only recently realized how iimportant a test kit was and it saved me many a fish. I recomend the dip-strip ones Jungle Labs. They are accurate. Very. Very. Accurate. Bad water means sick fish. If you got cold all of the sudden, really cold, your immune system would weaken, and you could get sick easier. Similarly, with fish, if a certain chemical is lacking, or there is too much of another, SICK!

I am not sure if I understand exactly what betta first aid kit means, that he was referring to, but if i do understand correctly, then I would put in melafix, aquarium salt, aquari sol, coppersafe, and pimafix :D

I hear that they inspire a bit more panic if a betta gets sick and you're more likely to overdose. Take away the coppersafe!

First of all, I really don't think it's fair to be treating a youngster like this.
Yes, she might not be acting responsibly with her fish and perhaps her other animals, but at least she's showing she cares for them which is the first step. She is asking about it, instead of ignoring it. Also, does no-body think to ask about the parents? Do they not have some part in this? In my opinion, if a parent allows a child to own a pet, the parent should ensure it's being looked after properly. Not dismiss that its ill, no matter if its a fish or a horse!

Also, you learn from mistakes. I've only just started owning Betta's, and at the moment I've got one battling fin rot after curing him of white-spot and the other has cotton disease. I've asked advice on here, and done the best I can for both of them. I wasn't exactly totally prepared for it, but I'm not gonna sit back and watch them die or let them be in pain.

FTBgirl, please yes get the test kits - the water has to be suitable for the fish to live in, otherwise, expect constant problems. You can have lucky runs with fish(and all animals) and unlucky runs. I think fish are the most difficult to spot something wrong with them, considering you can look at a rabbit and say "Oh, that's limping" or whatever, but with a fish you only really notice when it's obviously ill. Unless of course you're a total expert with it, which I doubt anyone on here is. I've read excessively on fish and I still don't know everything yet.

Ya...
Its not like I can just go to the pet store whenever I want. Hello... Can anyone notice that if my mom says I cant go get a test kit right now. Than I cant go get a test kit right now. Thanks
xweeqtx for pionting that out.
