Yikes. .. Kids Don'T Realize Guppy Is Gone!

Well, we had a beautiful yellow and black guppy who clearly was sick and had to be euthanized. I did this while my kids were at school. That same day I looked EVERYWHERE and couldn't find a duplicate so instead I bought an orange fish and told my kids the guppy was dyed to match the other orange fish. Well, my kids actually believed me! The deal is the fish I bought was lively in the store, but never ate when I brought him home and basically sat at the bottom of the tank breathing hard. I took him back to the pet store to be put in their hospital tank. Well, he died the next day.

Last night my son said something about how he has two male guppies and two female ones. The above mentioned first dead/then dyed fish was included in those two males. Then my other son walked in and asked to see if that fish is still okay. NEITHER walked over to see if the (now absent) fish was in there! lol

I guess this means I should get another guppy before one of them goes over and counts the fish??? I hadn't planned on purchasing one. Kind of liked having less in the tank since it's small, but I don't feel like doing the death talk right now (they've experienced two family deaths recently and I'm kind of emotional overwhelmed with those situations)!

Ugh, so the search for a new guppy, I suppose, begins! It is so difficult finding a healthy guppy

Yeah, finding healthy guppies is difficult! The helthiest I could find local to me for aaaages were endler-crosses so I ended up with 3 of those instead, of course two then ganged up and killed the third -___- guppies(or endlers for that matter) are not a route that I would go down again tbh. Good luck finding one to match!

personally ( and i know i`ll be slated for this) i would be honest with them

my parents tricked me once with a white rabbit.. thing is id spent so many hours with him, it didnt work and i hated them for lying.. please dont think im telling you what to do, but im a mum, and i know kids soon forget ( my daughters betta died the same day as i bought it, the very same evening she was asking if she could have an oscar instead

) and i happen to think it would be the right thing to do

and besides.. how you gonna cope with a tank wipeout if you buy a dodgy one

Hmmmm oscar or betta despite my soft spot for bettas, i'd take an albino tiger oscar any day wonderful if you have the tank space i love em big hehe


Back on topic i recently bought 3 guppies for my mum, withing 2 weeks i lost 2 dwarf frogs (one of which i'd had a while ) 5 phoenix rasboras and 2 of the guppies, all that is left of that venture is one orange male guppy(gerry) and a sunset platy(peggy) in a tank now dedicated to dwarf cichlids and soon gouramis

I agree finding strong guppy stock is hard, at the shop we sometimes have to quatrentine them for so long (8 weeks at one point!) that we just end up ordering another batch.

Guppys are annoying to keep i have 5 at the moment witch hav'nt died off thankfuly normaly one of them would of died by now!!

Thanks for your advice. I did purchase another guppy today and am just going to tell my son he's new. I'm also adding a second pygmy cory to see if we have better luck this time around (we had four, but three died) and the last one has been alone for quite a while and so I'm adding in a friend for him.

I'm contemplating adding a dose of Levamisole just in case the new one OR my other adult one has any parasites. Plus, it would be good to make sure the little ones don't have anything like camallanus. The store I went to had some so-so guppies sooooo, probably already have some issue or another.

It kind of looks like the "girly" fin on one of the females is turning into one of those male whatever you call them. But, she has a dark tummy too. Either she's morphing or she's pregnant! Ugh. I told my son she is a girl and he's thrilled at the idea of having babies. I may end up having to go back and purchase a female too because he's expecting babies and there is NO WAY I'm going to get pregnant again, so it's up to the fish!

Personally i'd give up on the guppies and get a hardier fish for them to look after, i've lost at least one of every batch of guppies i've bought.
They are really attractive fish but I now regret buying them. Only one i'd be sad to see go is the one who had a chunk bitten out of his tail cos he's a battler and hasn't succumbed to illnes.
