Had my fluval edge running since monday eve. 5 hours ago it was fine. Crystal clear. Now its got misty cloudy water? Any ideas ..... i need the professionals lol

Hi, is the tank cycled or still cycling....?

it could be a bacterial bloom

do you have any fish, shrimps, snails etc etc in the tank already?

no fish or any thing....literally filled it up on monday eve.... put my substrate in after cleaning it.... couple of fake plants. some tap safe stuff and some tank start stuff that came with the tank. It claims to make the tank instantly safe lol.... so its on its second day of cycling....what should i do about it? i figured leave it for while and see if it clears?

i added a cap full of nutrafin cycle that came free with the tank? and i added that monday eve

Nutrafin cycle....biological aquarium supliment - immmediately establishes safe biological aquarium environment ---- powerfull responsive amonia and nitrite elimination ---- alows immediate introduction of fish ---- safe for marine and freshwater tank.

Thats whats on the bottle. :) but im still going to cycle the tank. just thought this might give the cycle a kick up the bum :D

More then likely all the bacteria in the bottle was dead long before you ever got it. Seeing how you don't have any fish yet you will be doing a fishless cycle(which is what us here at TFF prefer). I have a link in my sig below on how to do a fishless cycle. I would also suggest reading the other links in my sig because they have a lot of useful information in them.

Yeah ive read those ;)

Jut need to get myself a test kit... but figured wont hurt getting it off on its own till i get one.

Just confused how it can get cloudy in a few hours?

Sometimes the bacteria in the bottle products actually contain dead organic matter which would give real bacteria something to eat, and might cause a bacterial bloom.

Also possible that you have a low level of ammonia in your tap water.

Leave it until you get your test kit, then test and crack on with your cycle.

What method are you using to cycle your tank?

No, what you've just described is not a "method." There are only three methods that we disucss of "creating a working biofilter" or "cycling the filter/tank." Those are fishless cycling with household ammonia, fishless cycling with planned organic material or fish-in cycling by fish exposure. Assaye is asking your -intended- method.

Personally I'm confused. I thought we'd been having quite a few discussions in "ben" threads that I recognized so I was assuming you were already cycling your edge but in looking back I now realize there was never much discussion of cycle, just mostly fish stocking and heaters! Basically this is good, I think it means you were planning ahead and now I guess its time to get down to more detail about actual cycling.

Getting a quick bacterial bloom is quite normal, seen on nearly every newly filled tank. Its harmless and will go away. You are seeing the actual water-born bacteria who are reproducing in vast numbers. These are -not- the autotrophic we are so focused on growing in the filter during fishless cycling. The ones you are seeing are heterotrophs that are feeding on some of the materials used in new tank manufacturing. I agree with Assaye that the dead bacteria in the "filter start" package that came with the tank will be adding to this, making the bacterial bloom larger.

Perhaps the greatest value of this subforum, very much one of the main beginner things we help with is a good Fishless Cycle. The two main tools are a good liquid-reagent based test kit and the finding of the right type of simple household cleaning ammonia. Using simple ammonia gives you much, much more feedback and control over the process so that you have a better idea of your progress. Since the process typically takes a couple of months, it turns out to be a fantastic system to get the fishless cycle going and then be receiving help on conducting it while also learning all the other core hobby things of making a stocking plan and learning about the routine maintenance that will be key after the fishless cycle as successfully completed and you get fish.

Cool....thanks for that WD. Aylways find your post very helpfull. Yeah I have been posting quite a bit recently in anticipation of getting the tank. I wanted to get a head start on things which could and would go wrong with the tank and also try get my head around the fishless cycle lol (which I think I have now :D)

I'll be doing a fishless cycle and will be adding some house hold ammonia when I eventually get out of work and the house lol. I also still need a ADI master kit. But figured until I get both of these there is no harm is setting the tank up how I want it, getting it warmed through, bedding in the filter and getting some bacteria and other good stuff on its slow way lol.
