Most amazing thing I have ever saw, golden severum and green severum laid loads of little eggs on a flat peice of driftwood about four days ago. The green severum now waits for them to hatch, and as soon as they have hatched he/she picks them up very gently in his/her little mouth and carries them off to this little crevis on an upright piece of atrificial stone in my tank. WOW gotta be the most amazing thing I have ever seen. They are all bunched together on this little ledge all wriggling away like mad. Hopefully the little ones will survive, any advice on helping them most appreciated. Everyone have a cigar.

hey robbie, what did u do 2 get em 2 spawn? water temp? water change? anything, what did u do? wha do u have n there with them? how do u sex them?

wow!congrats! i know that severums are one of the hardest cichlids to breed,so well done to you

patti_n_jojo - if you want your severums to breed, the first thing i recomend to do is give them a bigger tank then you have now,(55 gal minimum)

I dont really know, all I can say is that the water temperature is thermostatically set for 24 C, that I changed water mabye every month, sometimes if nitrite was heavy I would change about a third of the water, that there is a flat peice of wood where the lady fish can lay her eggs, and generally the severums are the largest fish in my tank (75 gallon I think), the other fish are two bala sharks, four silver dollars, two upside down catfish, two spotty catfish, 1 red tailed shark, two other ciclid looking fish and two other little fish which names I dont know. Only thing i can think of is that because i live in glasgow, scotland, tap water is very soft and absolutely nuteral, although tank water has Ph of 6.5, other than that i whish i could tell you.

patti_n_jojo, your aquarium is way overcrowded! I would worry more about getting a bigger tank (55 or more)or returning those poor severums (which get 8" and sometimes even LARGER!) before even thinking about breeding them! Keeping 2 severums in a 29 gallon is practicly abuse, you bad aquarist (is that better?)! :X
