Hello, I know ive asked about canister filters and different medias in the past trying to understand why and how they wrrk but i dont think i ever asked the this... this being of course why i asked all the other questions. I have 2 pengiun 350 filters, but i want really clean water and at some point want to up grade my tank again (not for a loooong time) so i was debating about getting the marineland canister c-360, and running them along side of the other 2. Now i know i know that would casue a lot of surface aggitation so i would need to lower the flow rate, but does that effect how many gph are filtered? and would it be too much for my tank? Please let me know what you think becasue i might be ordering it this weekend.

Thank You,

Alex

lowering the flow rate would lower the gph rate less flow out so less water sucked in wouldnt be totally sure on 2 much for the tank as in overfiltering but imo more filtering can only lead 2 cleaner water the bacteria would still be there id imagine just the water would be going through the filter sytem quicker if that sounds rite lol :P

but ultimately if i lower the flow rate to much it is kind of pointless to even having it then right? so do you think the 700 gph i have on the tank is sufficent???

as far as im aware a good ratio is 5 x the tank size so 55g would be 275gph so i'd say 700gph is more than enough

i personally wouldnt waste ur money :)

But see i also have a heavy stock which needs they heavier filtration and im planning on eventually getting a bigger tank, so my thinking is get it, use it until i get the bigger tank, then transfer it to clone my tank. but i dont want to do it if the its going to cause to much of a current. Which is where im stuck.

if ur planiing on a bigger tank in the future then maybe!!! even sayin that 700gph is a big flow rate as it is , i'd imagin that 700gph would be sufficient for a 100gallon tank never mind a 55 gallon :) but im not sure if the fish u have like a fast flowing current i know most livebearers do but i think u need 2 get a response from some 1 that keeps the sort of fish u have 2 be honest sorry if that doesnt help :)

hopefully some 1 else will have an opion on this :):)

Actually I think youve helped alot, i have a tendancy to go over board with EVERYTHING i do, so i think you actually talked me out of wasting $150.00. So thank you. Im just going to add some different media to the filters i have and see how that goes.

good luck :):):)

i dont think i will be over kill if your tank is 55g then a 700gph turnover is only 12x per hour as a rule of thumb 5-10x is adequate. so it might be a good idea to get some more bacteria colenised before u upgrade :good: .

i dont mean to throw the spanner in the works

See i have 700 gph now, plus i was going to add a canister filter of 360 gph on top of the already 700. for a total of 1060 gph. of course the new tank is a few years so yea it would have time to colonize but i was thinking that 1060 gph would be to much current for a 55 gallon. Does that make sence?

o right i thought that it would take it to 700gph , in that case then you do not need anymore filteration and 700gph would turn over a 6x2x2 5x so even if you upgrade your tank then you will not need it then either :good:
