Worming

Hey guys,

I've been wondering for a couple of days now if it's worth de-worming your fish at least once just in case, so that if any do have worms the problem is eradicated before symptoms start showing?

Thanks to anyone who can let me know if this is a good idea or not :3

i would say no. unless you get symptoms i wouldnt chuck meds at a tank. i know that a lot of discus keepers will worm their fish say once a year , but with discus worms are pretty much a fact of life. also worms can quickly become resistant to the meds . concentrate on keeping your fish strong and healthy is the best line of defence as a healthy fish immune system will be able to keep things like that in check. only treat for worms if you are getting symptoms , such as white stringy slimy poo , loss ofr appetite , hiding away in a corner etc .

I agree with Mark, worming as a just in case is not really necessary.

I agree about medicating only when necessary, but it's just something that I've been pondering for a few days.

i went to see a mate yesterday
he runs a tropical fish shop
he worms once a year we were
on about in the early days
and how we used to worm fish
we used to use dog and cat
worming tablets crushed
down in to a powder and
a lot of guess work not
like now with worming
powders mind you it did work

Internal parasites signs are as follows.

Long stringy white poo, clear mucas poo.
Worms sticking out of the anus.
Enlarged anus, red inflamed anus.
Fish will look skinny or bloated.
Sunken in belly sometimes.
Bent spine sometimes.
Fish will sometimes flick and rub.
Sometimes fish will spit food out and stop eating.
Sometimes fish will swim on there sides.

I dose a worming agent every once in a while
Flubendazole 5% powder

I would certainly suggest quarantining new fish, and if any show signs as Wilder has noted above, then worm them in the QT tank before introducing to you main tank. If your current stock is showing no signs, then it most likely isn't worth it.
