if the barks already naturally falling off it will be fine to use. Just make sure you strip off all the bark and i normally give it a quick sand aswell then boil it and soak it until it sinks and its safe to use. Ive done it with loads of wood and never had a problem with it, today i even added some more wood to a tank that i collected from the forest about a week ago.

I have used dead wood with bark on it many times and TBH it doesn't do much of anything. The bark will be gone in about a year, but its not going to mess up a regularly cleaned tank. Its not even worth worrying about in a planted tank. I don't normally boil my wood, but you certainly can do it. Shrimp and snails clean mine.

Ha! My garage is becoming a storage facility for scavenged wood, I pick up every interesting piece I find. My husband has also been very helpful by saving a few choice pieces when he prunes our apple tree. I leave those outside to age.
