I never seem to see pieces of wood in my lfs that are sticks, rather than chunkier pieces and I wondered about going looking for some sticks/branches myself in the local woods. Is there anything I should particularly avoid or is there a preferrable type of tree for the wood etc?

Suggest you look in the local streams for driftwood rather than the woods. This way you will get branches that have been 'weathered' by the water and less likely to rot.

Driftwood has all the sap leached out of it by the time you get it. I don't know what sap and the softer parts of the branches would do your tank.

I'd avoid fresh branches.

Cedar wood also seems to last longer in the water while others rot...
Just be careful about the polution or bugs on the wood.

thanks for the advice everyone - one mega stick-gathering hunt coming up :p
