This Spring, when my goldies started outgrowing their 10 gal indoor tank I moved two of them to a makeshift "waterfeature" outside. This is a black plastic 30 gal tank (about 18inches deep) in a protected area (under the eaves) off my patio. The tank is filtered, planted and currently heated with a small aquarium heater and the fish are thriving and growing there. We rarely get a hard freeze, so I am hoping that the heater and some sort of insulation wrapped around the tank will keep them safe for the winter as I simply don't have anywhere else to put them.

Is there a rule of thumb for feeding outdoor fish during cold weather? I don't know if they hybernate or something....?:)

Any thoughts?

Hi,

When the water starts to get cold you can continue to feed Wheatgerm food, and Tetra claim that you can feed down to four degrees with their wheatgerm food. However I think six degrees should be the minimum.

Thanks! I don't think we'll get that low at least not with the little heater!
