I bought the following tetras:

6 x Neon
4 x pencil

My tank is approx 30 litres and has the following dimensions:

16" long by 12" high with a 10" width.

Your tank is a tad over 6 gallons so you are pushing it with just the Neons. I take it they are all juviniles at the moment so as long as you regularily water change and your tank IS fully cycled then they will survive but will not be too happy especially as they grow.

Solution:
1) Either take Neons back to LFS and keep pencils or......

2) Take pencils and 2 neons back to LFS and have 4 happy Neons.

IS your tank cycled or are you trying to use your stock to cycle with fish? If the latter then even more important to follow the above or deaths are only days away!

I'm not so sure the neons would be happier if there were less of them...

Neons are a schooling fish, and a small one at that and are thus more comfortable in larger numbers (more like 8-10+)...6 would be the absolute minimum I kept neons in. Also, removing two of them isn't going to give the entire group anymore lengthwise swim room which is what I think they really need.

the tank is cycled, they are juvs atm. I thought neons stay very small? and cardinals are the ones that grow?

Your tank is just under 7 UK gallons. :good:
Could you perhaps post a picture so that i can see how big it is and wether the neons will be happy in there. :D

If you mean Pencilfish, they'll get to around twice the length of the Neons. In such a small tank, it's best to stick with just the Neons; things can go wrong very quickly in a small, overstocked tank.
