will platy and sword breed

will my red female platy and my red male swordtail breed even if there are swordtail females in the tank?

I have been told that it is possible. I am hoping for my platies and swordies to breed with each other at the moment but so far, no fry (though I have a few pregnant females right now)......

I not sure thats right

I believe the red swordtail was developed by breeding platies with swordtails

Most of the color variations that we enjoy in swordtails are the result of breeding the standard green swordtail, X helleri, with platies. Platies have a large natural color variation that swordtail breeders used to get most of the swordtails we see today. It is not easy to get right and sometimes the fry are not fertile but many of them are. If your platy has the option of breeding with her own kind, another platy, she will. The swordtail, being a typical male, won't much care as long as she is willing. LOL
