As the title says, just wondering if keeping my airstone on all day or turning it off will speed up my nitrogen cycle as i am trying to get my nitrites down.

Thanks
Rob

in my experiance no it wont help but it would oxagise the water for your new fish so u could have it running the day befor u get the fish im guessing that will help them relax =]

You need oxygenated water for the cycle to work, either an air stone or the filter outlet disturbing the waters surface.

If you have bumped the temperature up for a cycle as the bacteria like it pretty warm then it would be wise to get some surface disruption going, however I don't really think an air stone is as violent as a filter ripping across the surface.

I cycled mine at 25 degrees, but i did a fish in cycle because i love doing water changes, its the most exciting thing in the world. honest.

Excellent, will leave it around 27/28 then
Thanks
It's not just a choose what seems to feel good sort of thing though. If you are fishless cycling then 29C/84F is the best compromise based on Hovanecs work and backed up by hundreds of cases we've observed here. If you are fish-in cycling or finished cycling then the best temperature is based on finding a numerical midpoint within all the ideal temp ranges of the particular species in your tank. When fish are in they always get the priority.
