my wife has brought my 8 year old a 25 ltr aquarium for his bedroom but i cant think of much other than a single betta or maybe shrimp for it .
any ideas i have always had larger aquariums 120 then 240 now 340 so size wasn,t a prob .

Anything from the Boraras genus would be suitable, as would small Hyphessobrycon species such as the Ember Tetra.

he wants neons but i think they are a bit active but havn't had any for years since changing to malawis

Neon Tetra's would be too big and active for a tank that small, most species from the Boraras are colourful species, Boraras maculatus for example, there's also the option of the Green Neon Tetra, which remains quite small.

i think i might change his mind buy telling him its a fighting fish

I've got green neons in a four foot, but they would go quite happily in a small tank IMO. Mine don't use much space at all; they have their favourite spot and don't swim round very often, or very fast; as opposed to something like silvertips which are the same size but very active; they shoot around their three footer like bullets!

For small tanks I always suggest; chili or mosquito rasbora, dwarf emerald rasbora, celestial pearl danios and male Endlers as well as the dwarf rasbora and ember tetras that StandbySetting suggests.

Do get some shrimps as well; all children seem to love shrimps!

just been looking at chilli and as he is a mad arsenal fan (i know ) red fish might be the way to go how many do you think with a few cherry shrimp

A small group of 12 would be fine, presumably you know about cycling? You could seed his tank with some of your current media, also Shrimp are likely to breed, their load on the filter is negligible however, so in theory you could have quite a few.

the tank is fishless cycling as we speak into the 3rd week ammonnia all good just waiting for nitrate to drop off

Well, the tank is roughly 5 gallons, so normally you'd say 5, but as they're so small, you should be fine with 7 or 8, plus some shrimps; shrimp don't really add to the bioload.

i will prob do 50% water changes weekly i have to change 30% anyway weekly on my tank messy bloody malawis
