my snails were all doing fine this morning....then I looked over a minute ago and one of them is floating....i tried pushing it down to submerse it but it bobs right back up...its like a stupid mimicry of bobbing for apples!

whats the deal?

Does it looks pale?
Is the shell cracked at all?
Is the snail in the shell?

If you answered 'yes' to any of the 3 questions, then unforunatley the snail is more than likely to be dead. :(

is it an apple/ mystery snail? they often go to the surface to breath, air gets trapped and they float. mine do it all the time. i wouldnt worry too much about it if there is a live snail in the shell. sometimes, you see them expel the air (little stream of bubbles comes out of the shell) and they sink right back down again.
sounds normal to me.
CHEERS

tbh I am not sure what kind of snail it is...it was sold to me as a mystery snail lol....it is a dark brown, shell isn't cracked, and the snail is still in there. I guess I will just wait and see what its doing....lol

if it is a mystery snail (round instead of oblong or compressed on the sides) it is likely just air. i sometimes spend more time watching my mystery snails then my fish

Agree with Lorax :)

seems i worried for nothing....the snail is now crawling all around like usual :) thanks everyone for the quick replies!

as someone spending a year raising these little guys i can tell you mysteries are clowns. they will float around for no reason i pretty sure they sleep like that, when they are ready to get down they will release the air from the shell and return to the bottom of the tank. some times mine will climb up the tank only to jump off the sides and float back down.
if a mystery snail dies they usually fall out of there shells, and they will smell like dog crap trust me, your snail is not dead.

I normally just take them out (when floating like that) and (lightly) pull on the cover door...If they're still alive, they will pull back, but if there is no movement... I brave it to smell them.... No doubting if that smell comes through... Then, they are dead... discard immediately as they can foul your water.
