Some of you may know I have been trying to find a good home for my 6 " celestial eye fancy goldfish for some time now as I would like to break down the tank he is in, I initially had him on ebay but after questioning the buyer about tank arrangements found the tank she was about to put him in was completely inadequate so I refused the sale and got a neutral :( the first one after buying and selling on ebay for nearly 10 years! having learnt my lesson I decided to advertise my fish on various free websites not looking for money just a caring good home and have had many enquiries, all again completely unsuitable, just recently I had contact from someone who said they had a 4ft by 16inx16in tank, great I thought! but when questioned she said that she had 11 goldfish in it one of which is a fully grown fancy fish :( when I explained that her tank was not suitable and that the fish will be cramped and stunted bearing in mind commons can grow to 12" she responded that her fish are fine, well cared for and not cramped and had not been sick and if they do outgrow the tank she has a large pond they can go in! why don't people understand that regardless of how an animal is acting it may still be suffering? goldfish especially cannot show their expressions well like other animals, also if she has this large pond why are they not in it now? they will not outgrow the tank they will just become stunted so how would she know since they just stay small? I think I am going to give up trying to rehome this fish as it is quite depressing for me to find out how many people really do not have any idea to care for fish properly and to know all this suffering is going on, they should ban common goldfish sales or at least say pond only :(

If you want rid of the goldfish you can not reject everyone.

You now know what LFS have to deal with and if they were to do what you did they'd have no money at all and be quite hated for it :p

Its entirely up to you but if you can't sell it to anyone don't sell it at all! Or give it to a lfs.

That's different though, she's not just trying to make money she's obviously more attached to it than lfs employees are to "their fish"

I don't want rid of the fish, I would quite happily keep him, I think he is great! only I am expecting a baby shortly and the cleaning of the tank each week is going to be a bit of a struggle so I would like to find him a good home beforehand if I can, if I can't then I will just have to keep him, he has good living conditions and I am not prepared to let just anyone have him, I made it my responsibility to care for him when I bought him so I will do that by trying to find him a good home too, but you are right I am unlikely to get him a good home with my expectations so I may as well give up! Just trying to point it out in my post that is all

People don't understand because......... They're stupid.

We were all stupid once before we got the message TT.
Congratz on your future sprog, betta fish! Hope all goes well!

You stick to your guns! Its refreshing to see someone who actually cares more about fish than profit!!

How far gone are you?
I've got 8 weeks to go - trained my other half in the art of water changing and maintaining my 200L and 260L so I just sit back and monitor the situation ha ha.

Lol, I've about 8 weeks to go too! I wish I could train my other half to do what you have done but he has no real interest in fish keeping whatsoever so he would probably just tell me to get rid of all my tanks! same with the cooking if I didn't do it I think we would starve, either that or we would be eating pot noodles, beans on toast or pizza every night, lol!

Haha. My other half is very domesticated, complete opposite to me aha. He knows the fish come before him lol.

People (in general) are arrogant, selfish, and want to believe they are always right or that they are or can be the "exception" to the rules, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink kinda thing. Fish keeping is a science, not an opinion, although we all have our own opinions regarded how it works. While re-homing fish I too have been picky and have turned down sales, I won't sell to someone who doesn't have the proper tank, stocking or knowledge, and I will actually quiz them before the purchase happens, if they are incorrect or don't want to listen to sound advice, then the sale is off. It's not about money, it's about the health and well being of the fish/animal. Hold fast to your morals, because I feel you are doing the right thing. Don't sell to arrogant people who think they are the exception to the rules, they never are and they are always wrong, and the animals they care for suffer from it. I feel that if I sell my fish/animals to people like that, then their blood/health/deaths are on my hands just as much as the hands who did it, because I permitted it to happen. I can't permit that to happen considering the knowledge I possess. You're doing the right thing.

Betta fish, congratulations on your pending little Betta fish.  In your first post you state "they should ban common goldfish sales or at least say pond only".  The issue with this is that ponds can still be small and neglected.  I would look at what your priorities are for re-homing the fish and put them in order of:
  • Must have
  • Nice to have
  • Will accept
This way, you may well find a good home for your fish without everything having to be 100%, which is unlikely.  Sometimes our knowledge can also restrict us in making decisions, yet what must be decided is, is the animal better of in a option A vs option B.

I would also be tempted to advertise what you are looking for in respect to a home for your fish buddy and see what happens.  E.g. My name is x, I ideally require the following fish quarters...  This way you are asking for what you want, and you never know it may turn up for you.

What is your little buddy in currently?

Hi, thanks for the responses everyone
smile.png
he is alone in a heavily planted 60L with a Cristal Profi e700 external filter, I know the filter is overkill for the size of tank but I guess you can never do too much filtering lol, he has reached what I believe is maximum size for his type. I guess I could try selling the tank with him? though it is quite an old one with a dodgy hood! not to say that the buyer won't just try to cram it full of goldfish though as he does look quite alone swimming in there but anymore and the tank will be overstocked, but people don't take this into account, perhaps they go by what they see in the lfs which is not meant to be a permanent home for the fish as they are trying to sell them, or by the advice they are given, we are all too aware of the goldfish bowl scenario which most people have been led to believe is fine for keeping these fish.
I have mentioned on my adverts what he requires as a bare minimum and that I will ask questions to find out what they have and the other fish contained and I seem to be getting a lot of people with large tanks crammed full of other fish, they think that if the tank is larger than what he is in now then it is suitable, not taking into account the other fish that not only take up space in the tank but are more than likely going to bully a large Celestial Eye with poor eyesight, slow movement and flowing fins, he would just be better off on his own.

60L yes, it's a long tank and heavily planted, I am aware this is the bare minimum for this fish and he would be better with around 100L minimum but he is kept on his own with no other fish and aggressive filtration, but I would like to find a bigger tank for him if poss, he was originally in a 100L tank but it was getting too much for me to clean as I am 6 months pregnant.
