When i look on some topics and discussions, it seems that everyone contradicts each other either by quoting them or just moaning about them. This has happened to me before and i just wonder why some people do this - i mean surely theres a better way of saying someones wrong than just just writing LMAO or putting little stupid emoticons?

Anyway, i know people would have moaned at me if i didn't actually include a question about fish so...

how often should you clean your filter and how exactly should you do it because i've read websites and books but they've all got different answers. At the moment i'm cleaning it every month by washing it in the actual tank water so i don't kill the bacteria but is there a better way?

In the end this is after all internet forums and it is just people opinions and experiences. What I do is take different people opinions on board then I make a final judgement myself of what I decide to do.

I’ve only been here a short while but am also finding some members very forceful of their opinions onto other people and very rude in the process some threads just turn into a witch hunt.
No one has not been nice to me though and I am really enjoying reading people threads and learning more about Fish. These are really nice forums imho as forums get just one or two need to tone it down.

From my understanding you are cleaning the filter the right way or best ^^ Not sure how often though

i only ever clean my sponges maybe every cple months in old tank water, although i've read it only needs doing when your filter seems a bit slow.

I am a fully qualified vet, however, some of the comments and opinions on here seem far more logical or practical than my training allows me to say. If I wanted to, I could argue each and every point - AND probably back them up with scientific proof, however, I still think that some people on here know more about fish and fishkeeping than me. Being a vet, we are trained in all aspects of care and treatment of all animals and creatures, but it DOES NOT make me an expert on fish specifically. I have kept fish all my life and so have my parents, but only have personal experiences and training to call upon

I think Bigpig summed it up pretty well when they said "this is after all internet forums and it is just people opinions and experiences."
Listen to what others have to say and try the different things for yourself. If some things work and some don't then use the stuff that works for you.

Cleaning filters depends on what sort of filter you have.
For HOB, external canister or internal power filter I usually suggest cleaning them once a month. Take the filter materials and wash them out in a bucket of tank water. When reasonably clean rinse them out in another bucket of tank water and then put them in the tank.
Disassemble the impellor shaft and wash the filter casing and impellor out under the tap. When clean put the filter materials back in the filter casing and put the lid on. Fill up with tank water and get it running again ASAP.

The reason I suggest people clean their filters once a month is to try and get them into a routine. If you clean the filter at the beginning of each month it will always be clean and you will have fewer disease problems. If you clean the filter whenever it needs it, you are basically letting the fish live in water that has been filtered through a cesspool of disease organisms. All this does is increase the changes of the fish becoming sick through poor water quality. And you run the risk of the filter actually stopping and then there won't be any filtration at all.
If you do it regularly regardless of if it needs it, the filter will be cleaner and run more efficiently and last longer.
If you need to clean the filter more often than once a month then it is not big enough for the tank and you need to add more filtration or reduce the load in the tank, (fewer fish or less food).

You get on any board that has to do with some kind of hobby or ownership and your going to have a rumble. Its crazy I know, some people just dont know how to have their own opinions and keep them to themself when they are inapropriate.

IMHO, it is possible to keep filters too clean. I have always suffered most of my issues shortly after a fliter clean, unless I stagger cleaning of different mediums over a number of weeks. Colin_T Obviously has had more problems with not keeping his filters clean. This goes to prove Bigpig's point about this hobby being down to personal experience, and this is where your argument potential comes into it.

I belive from my experience that my way of doing things is right, and Colin's way is questionalble. He probibly thinks of it the other way arround. We could both argue untill one conseeds to the other, or other members choose to share their opinions on the matter, discounting one of us, as I have seen many a time occur here and on other boards. The other option is to confuse the heck out of the OPer, by saying, you know what, we are both right, despite the fact that we contradicting each other

(No offence intended Colin, I'm just using you as an example. You are far less forceful than others on here :good: )

The crux of the matter is that you are voicing your own opinion on this board, and others are free to do also. This will often lead to a heated debate between members, but IMO, you shoulden't give your opinion unless you are prepaired to have it questioned. It would be good practce to be prepaired to back your opinion up in each of your answers, to give a good knowlage base to the OPer, as to why you advise your way, shold a debate break out and not have a clear answer. This allows them to draw their own conclusion :good:

All the best

Being nice, in a mood, nasty, argumnatative, etc is all part of being human ;) without them all combined there would be no balance ;)

Hi, sorry to hear that you think that, quote, "everyone contradicts each other either by quoting them or just moaning about them." For a 'newbe' to meet everybody here in 6 days is amazing ;)

The idea of the, again quote, " putting little stupid emotions " is to give someone an idea of the context of how something is being written :/

IE. A) Oh get over yourself ;) or :p (a bit of fun)
B) Oh get over yourself  or :sly: (P****d off!)

Anyway, it's the internet so some get all brave because it's anonymous, bit like the guy in the car who flicks you the V's then speeds off.

Me? I'm just a cantankerous ole fart!

Oh, your question I nearly forgot..... Different filters need different maintenance. I have overhead trickle filters for instance. I have tweaked them somewhat and have many different medias. The first is a polyester fine which gets cleaned every water change (weekly) Then coarse foam which gets squeezed out in tank water every other water change, ie, one side one week then the other side the next. Next are the noodles in a tray, a gentle swish in tank water once a month. Finally more coarse foam which is cleaned in tank water when neccessary 2-3 months depending.

That's it!.....Hey, do try to enjoy this forum, it's the best :D

Well my answer to this, yep people are human and characteristics do come out, but it is so easy to sit at a computer screen and type words in, whether good or bad, you will always get people thinking they know best, but you get that in real life...there are people on here who come on solely to wind other people up, people who come on here to read only, never posting comments, and people who offer great advice!

I often sit and wonder if people's persona on here is what they are like in 'real life'

After all it is just a forum like any other, you will get bitchiness, back stabbing, anger, etc...but hey after all, it is only a forum!!

Its easy to be mean when you can hide behind your computer....

Its also easy to misinterpret the tone of a response when you have to read it and cannot hear it. Often if you hear the person reading their own response you would likelu take it differently.

:)

My first forum experience was on a professionals website - communicating with colleagues to learn and share information and techniques with each other. There I learned to just keep a freakin' low profile as there were certain people who loved to display their superiority and holier-than-godness. In fact, I had to recognize some of that in myself! I guess that's a growth experience...

People on here aren't argumentative!

Why don't you get your facts right before you.................................

Just kidding.

BTT

some of the arguments on here are extremely amusing, brightens my day sometimes.

Its just people being people isn't it.
