Who Wants One Of These?

Are those sunfish also called pumpkinseed fish... a friend caught a few and had them in his 500 gallon pond for a while, but boy were they mean and nasty.

I'd rather go fishing in my backyard and lets them go back in the river/lakes/ponds. Since we (US people) are so close might as well not take them out of the habitat. I can understand exotic fish but fish that live five minutes away from us?

Pick up the fishing poll!

Not all of these live in our backyards. I meant backyards as in the same country, but a lot of these have limited territories. In marlyand, many of these fish are extinct or functionally extinct. Many of these darters are gone from maryland, many of the catfish as well. ABout all we have in maryland are bass, perch, and blue gill. We have almost no sunfish, darters, or channel cats anymore so I can't just grab a fishing poll to get them, or go to my local stream to watch them.

Bluegill are are a kind of sunfish. Whenever I go fishing in the lakes that's pretty much all I catch, and maybe a bass or 2.

All those fish are coldwater right, it'd be awsome to have a pond filled with them :drool:

Yeah I suppose they are, but the only kind in maryland that your likely to see. Not the same as the ones in the photograph either.

In this time of the year, the Chesapeake is filled with flounder. I went fishing on a vacation to Ocean City and caught a whole bunch, but all were 2 inches below the size you're allowed to keep them. :(

If a retailer gets in, say, some sunfish, and they dont sell very well 'cos people think they are too ordinary or something
======================

Actually sunfish are probably one of the most colorful fish on earth. But I undersatand what your saying, thats why I posted pictures of the most interesting and beautiful fish, all of these would undoubtedly sell well, especially outside of the Unite States.

I am cirtain they have been imported into Britain, a Public Aquarium near me has some Pumpkinseepd in a tank with some carp; they wont have caught them specially. I think a reason why sunfish dont sell well is because they appear to be similar to cichlids in appearence and charecter. So they would probably sell in the same numbers as larger cichlids. They are also coldwater, and anything labeled as such in a fish shop thends to be ignored by most people. Why would any one be interesed in setting up a coldwater tank for potentially aggressive fish that get large [Note sarcasm]? Most fishkeepers tend to ignore coldwater tanks because they are usually filled with goldfish and usually looking into them produces no interesting fish.

I can see your point but they are not coldwater fish. As with many fish labeled as coldwater, they are resistant to cold temperatures, but that doesn't mean they like them. They prefer temperatures in the low to mid 70's but can live through a winter.

So they are coldwater fish. No tropical fish can survive a winter, hense they are called tropical fish because they need tropical heat to survive. Although a European winter is colder than some American ones (ie, Southern states), Sunfish can be kept in unheated tanks, and thrive and breed in some I know.

Alligator gars are sold in my LFS, but they get 9+ feet long!! Lampreys are like leeches... you'd only be able to keep them alone and give them fish to suck the life out of >_<

Wow, are you sure? When I got fishing I only see them grow up to 3 feet( not including beak).

Native fish are not sold in stores, because anybody could go out with a net and catch some if they wished to.
Wiki on Alligator Gars

Thats a big fish with sharp pointy teeth :crazy:

=======
A true coldwater fish is a fish that cannot be happy in temperatures above 62 degrees. Ie. Sterlet and most sturgeon. Goldfish are a false coldwater fish. Sunfish are a temperate water fish, not a coldwater fish. A temperate water fish is a fish that preferes temperate temperatures between 62-76. A Tropical fish preferes 68-80. THey can live together quite happily if someone is willing to let them adapt.
