Who Wants One Of These?

I agree, what arnt more native fish (not just from America) seen in shops? Amia calva is a good alternative for snakeheads; Ameiurus melas are interesting larger catfish; Enneacanthus chaetodon are pretty and delicate, but not a bad choice for experienced fish keepers; and many of the sunfish and darters would make good aquarium fish.

However, some of the ones you have chosen are a not great for aquariums: Alligator gars get way too big, lampreys can be very hard and expensive to feed and Paddlefish are huge and eat a lot of micro-organisms.

But the trouble is simple supply and demand. If a retailer gets in, say, some sunfish, and they dont sell very well 'cos people think they are too ordinary or something, then the retailer wont get them back in again. Why should he use a tank for fish that wont sell for a few months when he can get through hundreds of neons in the same tank in the same time?

Edit: the Molly looks like a Poecilia velifera or a P. latipinna, almost cirtanly the latter. This is what Mollys should look like, not the inbred crappy rubish that fish shops decide to sell.

Yeah number 22 is a sailfin molly. They all look nice, but i dont know anything about them. LOL

Actually sunfish are probably one of the most colorful fish on earth. But I undersatand what your saying, thats why I posted pictures of the most interesting and beautiful fish, all of these would undoubtedly sell well, especially outside of the Unite States.

Alligator gars are sold in my LFS, but they get 9+ feet long!! Lampreys are like leeches... you'd only be able to keep them alone and give them fish to suck the life out of >_<

Those are saltwater fish. Ok let me rephrase, they are some of the most interesting and colorful freshwater fish on earth.

I said one of the most, thats hardly a definitive statement. And that sunfish is ONE OF THE MOST coloful freshwwater fish on earth. How can that be disputable really, look at it. How can it be any more colorful? A human couldn't make many more colorful fish using a photoshop. Grrrrrr

I like the sunfish...........but aren't they predators? Do they require a very big tank?

Are you even allowed to catch 'em then put 'em in an aquarium?

It depends on the species I'm sure. THey are predators and cichlid level agressive. But with many hunters, I they can be weened to flake food, as the site I posted has done.

I thought he was making a joke about fish swimming and not actually physically being on earth.

Wow, are you sure? When I got fishing I only see them grow up to 3 feet( not including beak).

Native fish are not sold in stores, because anybody could go out with a net and catch some if they wished to.
