Wow amazing breathtaking fish. All are from the United States of America, And I bet not one of those fish has ever been in the fish trade. It's such a shame, they are beautiful and right in many of our backyards. Too bad that the Fish Hobby has only barely scratched the surface of what America has too offer. I'm seeing American Gambusias or Mosquito fish in the hobby, and some american blennies and Gars or needlefish and even flounder/flatfish, but other than those, I see virtually nothing. THe Lepomis or sunfish of america are much like cichlids, but are just as beautiful and don't have the same temperature requirements, Ie. they don't require a heater and can live in your pond. It's just mindboggling.

Check out this site for more native fish

There's a pond near me, Beck's Pond, and my dad and I always see HUGE schools of brown bullheads go by, when they're small. I mean huge, too, way over a hundred fish. We brought a few home and put them in our tank along with a few sunfish (at least I think that's what they were). The sunfish are awesome, nice personality.

actually, several of these fish are in the hobby, others I have seen on aquabid, and still OTHERS i have seen at my lfs, though they are in the breeding room, and not on the floor.

i have alligator gars, tons of mosquito fish, and different kinds of sunfish in the lake 2 doors down o.0

I guess im lucky to live in Florida? =P
But i really like fish number 13 :eek: it looks awsome to me

It's a type of sailfin molly that I've never seen. I believe that most livebearers do infact come from america though.

i've seen the gars and most of the ones you've mentioned you've seen, also sailfin mollies in several stores as well as aquabid. I've seen the mosquito fish, the gambusia, and few different kinds of sunfish and darters on aquabid, and in my lfs i've seen several oddball types of US fish because the owner went on "fishing" trips and brought them back. A few types of pygmy sunfish (okefenokee for one), and several types of brackish water fish. *edit* also some shiners, though i forget which type exactly, that had amazing colors. They were like swimming rainbows.

Some people keep gar and sunfish. I'm sure some of the others are kept too but most get rather large and require a big tank.

Wow, some of those are really pretty. I really like 5 12 and 15 (or is it the one under 15.. shrugs)...

====================

That has hardly stopped the fish trade before.
