Hi

I have a 240 litre tank, all water stats are 0 ph = 6.8. I have 7 neon tetra's, 6 glowlight tetra's, 6 zebra danios, 2 black widow tetras, 2 small silver shark, and 2 small (new addition) clown loaches. Everything was fine for the last 2 months till i put these clown loach in at the weekend, now all my fish have broken out into small white spots on their fins and body, i presume this is white spot. I have bumped up the temperature now to 29oC and im about to remove the carbon and wool from my filter (standard juwel filter for the tank) will i be okay to just use the treatment i use for my goldfish tank?

Is there anything else i should do?

Danny

I'm not sure on treatment thats used for goldfish but be wary with the loaches, theyre very sensitive to medication , i'd use 40-50% of whatever is recommended for the tank vol

loaches need a bigger tank and thre more. bala/silver shraks also need a bigger tank.

try usig a natural med that wont kill loaches like ich attack from kordon.

if the loaches werent there you could ave also used salt.

keep temp up until some thing new happens then tell us.

I am not sure it is safe for loaches, but the thing I have had the best results with is CopperSafe. I do not get ich often, at all. But I have not had a case when CopperSafe hasn't cured it. I turn the tank temp up to 83 degrees and the ich is gone within three days. It's like magic. I really like the product.

Thanks for the replies guys, i dosed the tank with 24ml of anti whitespot from interpet last night; it says 1ml per 10 litres.I removed the cardon, bumped the temperature up to around 29oC. Checked on the fish this morning and they are all still present and correct. Is there anything more i could do? I am keeping the light off on the tank untill the fish are cured and keeping the air pump on all the time.

Thanks for the help,

Danny

P.S: I presume the interpet anti whitespot treatement is okay for clown loaches as it has a picture of one on the box/bottle.

you say all your tanks` stats are 0 does that mean that it`s quite a new setup? do the spots look like grains of salt sprinkled over them?
that med is fine with clown loaches, ive used it myself
i suggest you get a quaratine tank too.. it would save this from new fish in the future.. if indeed the loaches did bring it with them..tho to be of any use they need to be quarantined for a few weeks rather than a few days,so paitence is the key :)

The tank has been setup for nearly 2 an half months so it is new but apparently cycled? Ammonia nitrate and nitrite are 0 ph 6.8 - i would have quarantined the clown loaches but i found nearly all the other fish had the same problem. They do look like salt sprinkled on them, the clown loaches pretty bad, the other fish have died down now and seem to be getting better.

Danny

make sure to correctly follow all instructions on the med bottle or else youll end in a loop.

aww dan thats a shame you lost them.. with a reading of 0 for nitrate the tank isnt cycled.. or anywhere near- unless of course you have a dodgy test kit.. carry on treatement and see how it goes.if they recover then you will need to get the tank cycled.. it stresses the fish so could be the cause

and of course good luck

I havent lost any yet, they are all starting too look much better, the clown loaches are by far the worst though. The tank has been setup for over 2 months now with fish in, maybe i have put sponges in the wrong order if the tank isnt yet cycled? I havent had any spikes in ammonia yet.

Danny

okay, i have put the second dose of treatment in on monday night, all the other fish, apart from the clown loach seem to be curred. The clowns did get a little bit better, but today there is lots of white, cotton wool, type spots on them. Is treating for white spot still the correct course ?

Cheers,
Danny

so ive come back home today and one of my silver shark has died, he never looked right, when the other one was growing he seemed to be getting smaller. There was no signs of white spot on him once i pulled him out. However my 2 clown loaches now look very sick. I need to get them into a hospital tank, i have a 10 litre hospital tank but no heater for it. Im going to have to order one tonight and hope it comes quickly :(

You need to continue to treat for ich until the ich symptoms are gone for a few days or it will come back even stronger. The cottony look is some kind of secondary infection because the ich is not being cured quickly. I would isolate the fish with the cottony look and continue to treat both tanks for ich. Maybe someone like Wilder will come along to help with what I assume is columnaris on the loaches.

Pimafix is save to use with the whitspot med. It's for fungus and external bacteria med.
Keep going with the whitespot med. Sometimes you have to do two rounds of meds.

The shark that died did he look skinny when still eating.

Thank you for all your help oldman47. I made a new thread with pictures of the loaches. http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/316419-is-this-white-spot-or-something-else/

I have now lost one after putting them into a hospital tank and decided to put the one remaining loach back into my main tank. Im unsure what to do with the storage box hospital tank you was saying.

Yes wilder he did, i bought 2 sharks at the same time, one seemed to be getting bigger while the other one was getting smaller yet they was both eating the same amount.
