Hi guys,

Post 16 minnows dying due to old age and only male

I got 3 white cloud minnows today when i was out on my bike and bought them home and put them in my tank, just wondered if they needed any special attention.

Oh, and one's pregnant

Any advice

Only piece of advice I can give you is make sure you keep them at lower temperatures, they're sub tropical fish.

How can i keep my tank cold then as room temp is about 24oC and the tank heats up quite quickly due to a powerful light and big powerhead on my filter?

I'm stumped, lots of water changes are impractical as they waste a lot of my money (not much) in dechlorinator and weekly cleaning bacteria!

Thats no problem, water is sparkling clean and all stats are good, flow rate is excellent due to the high pressure nozzle on the filter and the airator adding (slightly) to the flow rate.

tried it and the fish got stuck to it (dumb thing), only thing i could do is put it in my plants but the hundreds of snails would get stuck to it there as well. #41####.

I didn't think D A M N was a swear word.

I'd leave it as it is, a stable temperature is better than a constantly fluctuating one, don't use your lights as long or install cooling fans to them.

ok, you have set ma a spark of genius, will now go and raid my old pc for any fans i can find and get a 10 volt dc transformer out of the loft (or nick it from somewhere else in my house) (just remembered, theres one in my room xD)

Will make a hole and get it to draw in outside air (which way would be best, in through the back, past the light and out or in through the top, past the light and out the back?)

Have now got fan running off of transformer, doing about 1200 rpm on a variable resistor. At max it will do 3500 rpm, i'll keep it about half way.

ok, spoke too soon. the fan just up and died on me.

Thankfully, because i am so clever i managed to replace the faulty 50 hz coil with another one from another fan of the same type (minus a few blades). Also replaced the permanent magnet inside as it was showing signs of wear. Now running at a max speed of 3746 rpm with 1387/1388 rpm being the notch kinda in the middle and 63 rpm being minimum thrust.

I have my minnows in temp of 75F-76F. Have been that way for years. But if the temp gets warmer or fluctuates too much, they don't last. Water changes are not impractical for your fish they are a necessity IMO.

yh i no that (thats why i change 95% every week) but doing one everyday doesn't appeal to me (thats how long it takes to warm up from sctatch with everything on timers.

Haaaaa! i just found this tiny little one with 22 curved blades which goes at 7592rpm! Amazing, shame it doesnt have any mounting points and it is nearly completely worn out. Anyway, i'll run its output through the back of the tank untill it dies (then i'll make it a new coil somehow).
